Daffodil Dawdle

Results Index

Steve reports: "On 29/03/09, Collingwood AC members Allan Rumbles, Andy Stalley and Steve Cooney competed in the 20th Daffodil Dawdle, a 26.4 mile marathon starting Near Newmarket in Suffolk. The marathon involved navigating around the course using written instructions and passing through a number of checkpoints.

It was only last Sunday that the trio finished the Sevenoaks 30 mile ultra marathon in perfect conditions but the heavy rain this week meant that the fields were extremely muddy and difficult to run through.

Andy and Steve had a great start and were so far ahead of the rest of the field that they decided to take in an extra mile since Andy mentioned that he was a bit behind in his target mileage this week...that is their story which they are sticking to! They reached the second checkpoint and saw Allan who had followed the official route. When Allan saw them approaching he ran off as far as a squirrel being chased by a dog would.

After that Andy and Steve were always behind Allan. As they overtook several runners, they were told that there was a man ahead muttering that he had to finish ahead of the pair no matter what.

It was a fairly quiet race until Andy and Steve startled an animal which then ran off at a tremendous speed. The duo could not decide whether it was a Lynx or a Cougar. Whatever it was, it was definitely not the usual thing you see in the countryside.

Allan had a great run and was the second finisher in an impressive time of 4 hours 20 minutes. Although Andy and Steve did an extra mile, they were only 3 minutes behind Allan in joint 3rd in 4 hours 23 minutes."

Sevenoaks Circular Challenge

Results Index

Andy reports: “Three Collingwood members completed the undulating Sevenoaks Circular Challenge, a 29.8 mile run around Sevenoaks in Kent. This was a new ultra for Steve Cooney, Andy Stalley and Allan Rumbles on route to their 100th marathons.

Conditions under foot were excellent and so was the weather, although no one bothered with sun cream, which turned out to be a mistake, as it turned out to be a lovely morning, close to perfect conditions for a marathon.

Steve and Andy set off quickly, with Andy and Steve sharing the lead for most of the first six miles from a good sized entry, including many ‘100 Marathon Club’ members. Steve was saved from serious injury by technology after four miles. A couple of dog walkers failed to control their five lively hounds, one of whom decided Steve looked good enough to eat! Luckily the mutt sank its teeth (large teeth, believe me, I saw them) into Steve’s Garmin. Luckily, Steve and his Garmin escaped without injury.

Andy dropped back to fourth having a bad spell for several miles, including taking a good detour down the wrong path, which Allan also discovered to be the wrong path soon afterwards.

Steve stayed strong and in the top three, then top two all the way to the finish, in an official time of 5 hours and 14 minutes for 2nd place. Andy recovered and finished well in 5 hours and 17 minutes for 3rd place. Both well within last year’s fastest time.

Allan had a pleasant run, taking time out to enjoy the excellent arrangement of cakes, biscuits, sausage rolls, rice pudding, fruit cocktail and savouries on offer at the four checkpoints. Allan finished in 5 hours and 51 minutes.

Due to the usual Collingwood detours Steve made the distance 31.6 miles, Andy 31.5 miles and Allan 31.3 miles. The route narrative although excellent, did provide a couple of challenges.

Another great value LDWA event, this time organised by the Kent Branch. Entry fee of just £5; for tea and coffee beforehand; tea and coffee with beans or ravioli on toast afterwards to complement the four excellent checkpoints. And a certificate to all finishers.

Steve, Andy and Allan all ran quicker than planned for unfortunately a longer distance than intended. A good day out in sunny Kent.”

Ray reports: "I completed the 20 mile walk in 5 hrs 30 mins and 7 seconds by my watch. The time keeper was a bit slow at the finish and managed to add 9 minutes to eveyone's time, making my official time 5 hrs 39mins."

Endurance Life Coastal Trial Series
Pembroke Marathon

Results Index  Photo

Dave reports: "It was a good day at the office for 3 members of Collingwood AC who travelled to do the 5th in the series of the Endurance Life Coastal Trial Series - The Pembroke.

Weather conditions were very good, there were bright sunny skies, albeit it with a rather chilly morning breeze so most folk were well wrapped up in 2 or more layers! We all registered (having signed medical indemnity forms) and were informed there would be the race briefing at 8.30am, which we didn't attend as we were all busy making last minute preparations, drinking hot coffee and pinning on race numbers etc.

The race started promptly at 9am, and we knew from the outset that it would be a tough day out there, as no sooner had we started, than we had to climb what seemed like 100 stairs up a steep cliff path, but at the top of the "stairway to heaven" we were rewarded by lovely vistas of the azure seas and rolling pasturage of the surrounding hills.

The coastal path stretched off into the distance and there was a steady steam of runners plodding purposefully towards attaining their 26.6 mile goal. The path ran along the coast for the first 18.5 miles around a peninsula. En route, apart from the resident sheep grazing we passed a few old ruined castles, the scenery was awesome.

After this we headed around in a circular loop and headed back across fields, along hedgerows and across numerous stiles and through kissing gates, and onwards towards the other side of the peninsula, where the course returned to the coast. The last few miles snaked up and down the steep coastal paths, just testing our mettle before descending down some steep coastal steps to finish under the red Endurance Life banner, which welcomed us home.

Final race standings were, Dave Ross 2nd in 3.32, Alan Rumbles 4.25 in 20th and Melanie Johnstone (who ran on an injured leg) in 5.02 - 51st place.

All in all it was a lovely day and weather conditions couldn't have been better. The scenery was spectacular along the coastal paths and the varied / undulating terrain lived up to meet the endurance-like expectations that we had all signed up for!"

Steyning Stinger

Results Index   Full Results

Allan reports: "Collingwood marathon club were out in force again today tackling the notorious Steyning Stinger.

Andy Stalley, Steve Cooney, Melanie Johnstone, Dave Ross & Allan Rumbles all set off together at the 8.30am mass start. Everyone soon disappeared into the distance leaving Allan bringing up the rear, working out the stiffness in his legs. (It was his second marathon of the weekend)

Doug White & Rob Wilson utilised the staggered start system & set off at 7.30am. All of the runners are closing in on their 100th Marathon with the exception of Dave & Rob who have already reached & surpassed this remarkable number.

Everyone seemed to run an uneventful race with the only downside to the day being a mist which kept the usual stunning views of the South Downs fairly hidden.

Dave Ross was the first home for Collingwood in a time of 3:14. Andy was next in a time of 3:36, knocking 4 mins 17 seconds off his previous best time. Following behind Andy was Steve in 3:49 with Mel cruising in, in 4:11 (knocking a massive 47mins off her time for this event last year) & last but not least for the Collingwood 8.30am starters was Allan in 4:44.

A shot glass was given to all the finishers & they all enjoyed a cooked breakfast afterwards although it was lunchtime!!!! Doug & Rob hadn’t finished when we left so I don’t have any times for them."

Well done to Dave and Mel on their wins.

Belvoir Challenge

Results Index   Full Results

Allan reports: "I ran the 19th annual Belvoir (pronounced beaver) Challenge Marathon today.

It’s an event organised by the friends of Harby Primary School & Vale Striders Running Club. The route follows footpaths, by-ways, tracks & with the permission of the Duke of Rutland goes through the Belvoir Estate (beautiful place). Plenty of checkpoints with food & drink at all of them, it’s very similar to an LDWA event.

The start was a bit of a cock-up with the runners & walkers of both the 15 mile & the Marathon event starting off together & in the same direction, causing lots of pushing & general running into each other. This only stopped when the routes split after about 1/3rd of a mile.

The course was quite muddy in places causing a few problems every now & again trying to negotiate the worst parts. I was talking to a few of the runners who have done it before & they all said that it was the driest they’ve ever seen it. God knows what it’s like when it’s bad.

All in all a cracking event but tough in places, quite hilly but the views made up for it all. To sum up, muddy & hard is the best way to describe it. One to pencil in for next year.

I ran a steady race with no incidents & finished in 4hrs 26mins. I’ve got the Steyning Stinger tomorrow. 1st double of the year."

Devon Coastal Marathon

Results Index   Full Results

Dave reports: "It was a busy weekend for Collingwood. Mel and Dave drove down to Devon after work on Friday night. The journey was eventful as we got delayed on the Salisbury Plains by 4 Chieftain tanks holding up all traffic on the A303. We finally got to Kingsbridge at 9:30pm, got changed in a car park and had a Thai curry washed down with some Thai wine. The B&B was nice and we slept well. Race day was a mad panic but we got to the start with about 30 mins to spare. The race was about 28 miles and the scenery stunningly beautiful. Mel did it in 5:10 and really enjoyed it. I did 4:02 for 4th place, the top 2 men having broken the course record. We left after our Chilli Con Carne lunch at race HQ, spent the night at a friend's place near Milton Keynes and on Sunday left to meet the notorious Allan and Steve at Draycote Water for our 2nd marathon of the weekend."

Mel reports: " On Sunday 8th Feb, several Collingwood Members took part in the 33rd Punchbowl marathon: Mel Johnstone, Dave Ross, Steve Cooney, Andy Stalley, Allan Rumbles, Rob Wilson, Doug White, Tom Wilkie and Ray Sullivan (20 miles).
The course started at the village hall in Witley and followed a 30 or 20 mile route, with some stunning scenery around the rim of the Devils Punchbowl and part of the downs. Conditions were not ideal to say the least, there was still snow and ice on the ground with some parts that were on tarmac proving to be very slippery indeed. Lucky my new off- road trainers that Dave bought me had loads of grip!!
As the route progressed, conditions didn't seem to be too bad until we reached a part where the puddles were very deep and had to find a slightly off course through the trees to get through this.
The event was well organised witith hot and cold drinks at the checkpoints and biscuits, sandwiches and rice pudding/fruit. At the end beans on toast and chips and more rice pudding was served and thoroughly enjoyed. Finishing times were Dave, Mel and Steve 5 hours 52. Very good run with all three putting in a quick sprint finish. Andy 6 hours 10, Allan 6 hours 23 , Rob, Tom and Doug 8 Hours 30 I think and Ray 5 hours 20?"

A report spotted by John in a local paper, written by a staff reporter:
“ I decided to take a walk on Wimbledon Common yesterday afternoon despite a very chilly blow and came across a relay race. I stopped to watch for a while and found out that it was part of a league involving local running clubs. I was struck by the vest of one of the clubs - gold with a blue cross front and back and learned that they were Collingwood. Their first runner (called John I think) did extremely well, hauling in runners from three other teams but unfortunately the next two (Nigel and Martin I heard ) were unable to match his effort and it was left to the last man (Keith) to put in a first rate performance catching a few runners in the process.”

Steve reports: "On 11th January Collingwood AC members Mel Johnstone, Allan Rumbles, Andy Stalley, Dave Ross and Steve Cooney all attempted the 32nd Winters Tanners 30 mile Ultra Marathon, starting in Leatherhead. This was the 2nd marathon of the year for all 5 runners who had completed the exclusive 100 Marathon Club AGM Marathon on the Sunday beforehand.

Mel had competed in the Surrey Ladies Cross Country League the day before. Andy had done the Banstead 5km Time Trial the previous day. Steve had competed in the Men's Surrey Cross Country League in the afternoon before as well as the Banstead Time Trial in the morning.

The marathon route was completely different to the 2008 route. The runners were given a route description and had to navigate the 30 miles around Leatherhead, Box Hill, Westhumble, Headley Heath, Mogador and Epsom Downs. Then they made the way back to Leatherhead.

There had been a lot of snow which covered most of the course making conditions fairly tough. Box Hill was completely covered in snow which meant that all the paths were unable to be seen, making it hard to find the correct route around.

Steve and Andy saw John Allen just before the first checkpoint. He was attempting the 20 mile route. He had also competed in the Men's Cross Country League on the Saturday!

Andy and Steve ran together and were pleased with their time of 5 hours 20 minutes. Allan was next back in a steady time of 6 hours 14 minutes. Mel and Dave finished together in 7 hours after taking in a couple of detours."

Allan reports: "This race started in the grounds of Arundel football club in the shadow of Arundel Castle. Registration at 7am for an 8am start meant a stay-over in Arundel the night before which wouldn’t be too bad but for the fact that Arundel seems to shut at 7pm which leaves nothing to do but get an early night…….

Bang at 8am in minus temperatures we set off along the frozen banks of the river, the frozen theme carried on for nearly all the race with some parts quite treacherous where it seemed all you could do was comedy running, where your legs are going like the clappers but you’re still stationary.

The only part of the race that wasn’t frozen solid was a marsh area but that still had a layer of ice which was a bit disconcerting when my foot went through what I thought was just a frozen puddle and I ended up ended up in mud up to my knee, this happened a few times on this section but it was a choice of running knee deep in the mud or trying the ice. (Rock and hard place, springs to mind.)

At least I didn’t fall off one of the lethally slippy wooden bridges into the rivers which run through the marshes as two runners did before I got there - that would’ve woken them up. They must’ve been freezing afterwards.

Despite the icy/marshy conditions, I ran a fairly uneventful race with the route extremely well signposted with no chance of getting lost. The event was extremely well organised with fantastic scenery, I’ll be doing this one again next year.

In my 51st marathon I came 51st in a time of 5hrs 8 mins."

Gatliff 50k

Results Index   Full Results

Andy reports: “Five Collingwood members took part in the Gatliff 50km marathon race from Edenbridge in Kent, organised by COPSE (Croydon Outdoor Pursuits and Events Club). Tom Wilkie and Rob Wilson set out early on the constantly undulating and very, very muddy and very, very wet off-road course. The race in its 25th year has a different route each year; this year would have been particularly challenging, even if the weather had been kind. There was very little road, lots of fields and a really saturated course that was impossible to walk properly in parts, let alone run. Add to that a farmer deliberately erected a barbed wire fence across a public right of way, just to be difficult. Luckily it was warmer than the predicted three degrees and the forecast rain stayed largely away, with just some light drizzle.

Mel Johnstone was accompanied by Steve Cooney and Andy Stalley. Unfortunately, Allan Rumbles could not make it after waking and suffering a heavy sneeze, which meant that he could not compete!

There were five checkpoints, three of which had simple cold drinks and biscuits, the other two had very welcome warm drinks and food.

Mel had a shocking run, quite literally. On a very slippery and tough climb she grasped an electric fence for balance. The resulting shock took her to her knees, but gracefully and ladylike. Later on, Andy went for the more spectacular, by sliding off the path into a ditch.

All three discussed new recipes on route and Mel has a couple of new ideas to try out on Richard, either fresh and warm, or reheated in the microwave! Poor Richard!

Mel (74th marathon), Andy (83rd marathon) and Steve (63rd marathon) finished together in 7 hours and 54 minutes, over a distance of 32.75 miles having ‘done a Ross’ in the first mile. A slow but understandable time in the conditions that were considerably worse that the Steppingley Step three weeks ago.

Tom finished in 9 hours and 33 minutes, with Rob a minute behind. Both had a traditional Collingwood detour once the sun set and following the route narrative became challenging.

All received a hot meal and certificate at the finish. Steve, true to recent form, received two hot meals!”

Andy reports:

"Allan turns 50 in a marathon eating race!

“Mel Johnstone, Steve Cooney and Andy Stalley accompanied Allan Rumbles around the gently undulating and very muddy Steppingley Step marathon route from Barton Le Clay in Bedfordshire, to make sure he safely completed his 50th marathon.

This was another excellent value LDWA, which cost just £4.75 in advance for Collingwood Members. There was tea and coffee, with biscuits before the start; a taste of things to come. There were five checkpoints with a range of tasty offerings; all had orange, blackcurrant and water, most had tea and coffee. The food varied but included jelly babies, jam tarts, buns, scones, rolls, sandwiches, biscuits, fairy cakes, apple pies, fruit cake and the variety of cakes at the last checkpoint was brilliant. Hot drinks at the finish with quiche, new potatoes, peas and carrots, with mince pie and custard.

All four set personal bests for food consumed during a marathon and all probably and uniquely put on weight whilst running a marathon.

The run itself was run in cool and bright conditions, but with recent rain, included many wet and very muddy sections. A number of fields were full of sticky clay. When the mud lessened towards the end, it rained a little.

Andy spent most of the run legging it away from Mel at the sight of a muddy puddle, after an 'alleged' and unfortunate splashing of mud by Andy across Mel’s face.

All finished in 5 hours and 41 minutes, but with over 35 minutes spent eating at the checkpoints, the actual pace was a lot quicker. Mel generously provided Champagne to toast Allan’s acceptance as a wannabee member of the 100 Marathon Club. All received certificates for their running.

Rob Wilson and Tom Wilkie also took part, but we have no details of their run or whether they matched the number of cakes eaten.”

Beachy Head Marathon

Results Index   Full Results

Mel reports: "Andy Stalley, Steve Cooney and myself were joined by the guest apperance of Steve's older brother Matthew to take part in the Beachy Head Marathon. Andy and I travelled down together and Steve made his own way down with his brother; he didn't want to have to make us wait for his brother to finish as he was walking it being his first event. However, I later learned it was so Steve could secretly beat his PB of the number of puddings he could eat; he even had second portions of main course this week!!
The course was a very picturesque off-road one and started in Eastbourne at the bottom of Willingdon Hill. It was measured as slightly over marathon distance having a total of 3500ft ascent, including stiles, bridges, cattle grids, steps and of course the Seven Sisters. At the top of these there was a fantastic view; that's my excuse for not running up them, oh and the fact that these came 19-20 miles in.
Didn't see Steve until after the run. He looked as fresh as a daisy. Must have been the massage! He had another good race and finished in 3 hours 48. Andy wasn't that happy with his time of 4 hours 12. That is still a good run considering the really busy week he had and the lack of carbo-load. I finished in 4 hours 48, slightly slower than last year. Never mind still enjoyed it.
All in all a very good event, jacket pot with sausage and beans, rice pudding and fruit, tea/coffee afterwards. Checkpoints had squash, biscuits and Mars bars. Joe the lone piper, piping at the top of the steps was making me feel very much at home, but unfortunately not making me run any faster."

Founders Marathon

Results Index

First Andy's report: "Four Collingwood members ran the Founders Challenge over a hilly 26 mile course, starting and finishing in Peaslake, Surrey. All four had recovered from the testing London to Brighton race only two weeks before. Mel Johnstone, Steve Cooney and Andy Stalley all had pre-registered. Allan Rumbles registered on the day, but for some unexplained reason, used the name of Alison Rumbles! Worse was to come, when he was heard singing the lumberjack song in the woods, giving particular gusto to the ‘high heels, suspenders and a bra’ section!

All four started together with Dave Ross from Sutton Runners, whose map reading is now legendary! It was not long before Steve and Dave disappeared off route and Alison Allan was dropped. Mel and Andy who were leading the others, then managed to take the wrong kissing gate and ended up on the wrong hill. At the second checkpoint, Mel and Andy met Allan who had somehow managed to stay on route, a rare occurrence for a Collingwood marathoner. Dave and Steve, despite another lengthy detour were somehow ahead.

Allan, Mel and Andy ran to the finish together, but did depend on Allan’s compass to get them out of a large wood, when the footpath disappeared. Allan and Andy were suffering with colds towards the end, Allan also hurt his back.

Steve was first home in 5 hours and 5 minutes (60th marathon). Mel (70th marathon), Andy (80th marathon) and Allan (49th marathon) finished together in 5 hours and 18 minutes. Allan hits the big fifty next week at the very hilly Beachy Head Marathon.

Typically good value for an LDWA event, (£2 off entry for being an LDWA member, which Collingwood members are). Cost in advance was only £5, which included coffee and a biscuit before the start, four checkpoints with drinks, biscuits and jelly babies.

There was soup, a pasta meal and a single pudding with hot drink after the event included in the price. Steve set a new PB, by having four puddings!

Also included was an A4 certificate. Andy was given the wrong start time and his certificate was therefore for an extra 90 minutes. When pointed out to the organiser, he had the correct time added with the old time roughly crossed out, which looks like a very cheap forgery, much to everyone else’s amusement."

Secondly, Steve's report, which strangely fails to mention anything about puddings: "On 19/10/08, just 2 weeks after successfully completing the London to Brighton cross country race, the Collingwood Marathon Club were back in action attempting the Founders Challenge. This involved navigating around the Surrey Hills using written instructions.

It was revealed at the registration that Allan had somehow been entered as "Alison Rumbles" but this was a genuine error and not a blatant attempt at trying to be first female home!

All 4 started together, joined by Dave Ross from Sutton Runners and a couple of other runners soon decided to run with the group. Steve and Dave were up front and took a wrong turning. The others immediately realised and apparently tried calling them back but they were not heard. The duo did about half a mile before turning back but the rest were now some way ahead.

Mel and Andy soon pulled away from Allan (who had been suffering from a cold all week). Steve and Dave managed to catch up with Allan and overtook him 2 or 3 times more due to a couple more wrong turnings by them and none by Allan.

Mel and Andy "did a Ross" (rhyming slang for "got completely lost") themselves and did not catch Allan up until about 18 miles. They then took the safe option and stayed with Allan until the finish. Allan was the man to follow since he did not take any wrong turnings at all.

Steve (and Dave) finished in 5 hours 5 minutes while Mel, Andy and Allan were not that far behind in 5 hours 18 minutes. All were a lot quicker than last year.

A certificate was awarded to each finisher but unfortunately Andy's one gave him an official time of 6 hours 48 minutes due to a mix up with this start time."

Chiltern Marathon

Results Index

Steve reports: "On 14/09/08 whilst the mega rich Collingwood marathon runners were in Maui, Allan and Steve travelled to the Chiltern Hills to attempt that marathon. This challenge involved navigating around the Chilterns following written instructions and finishing in a time of less than 9 hours.

Although they started in hot conditions Steve decided to wear trail shoes but Allan opted for the road trainers. It took Allan less than 2 miles to realise that he had made the wrong choice. The terrain was extremely muddy in places, especially in wooded areas.

The name 'Hills' was apt since there were certainly plenty of them on the route. The downhills were very steep and it made descents difficult.
The scenery was probably one of the best they had seen in their 100+ marathons between them.

Both finished well inside the target time and completed the marathon in 5 hours 23 minutes.

It's a busy time for the pair and they are back in action next week when 'Collingwood Marathon Club' will be back to full strength when Andy Stalley and Mel Johnstone will join them in the New Forest marathon in Hampshire."

Seaford Marathon

Results Index   Full Results

Steve reports: "On 31/08/08 Allan Rumbles, Andy Stalley and Steve Cooney took the fairly short journey to Seaford on the South Coast to compete in the marathon there. This was the first event after a trial run by the organisers last year.

They left home in glorious sunshine but within 10 minutes there was a lightning storm together with a torrential downpour. The storm had calmed by the time they gathered at the start and changed to fairly good conditions.

The route was along roads, tracks and fields and was extremely well marked with arrows. Runners were also given a set of written instructions so it was virtually impossible to get lost. This was still not enough for a particular person and a Sutton Runner got lost and ended up miles off route. He had to travel by car to the finish and therefore did not officially finish the course despite running more than the 26 mile marathon distance. The runner will not be shamed even more by being named.

There were only a couple of heavy showers during the day but the conditions were not as bad as the trio expected considering the earlier storm.

Steve was first in for Collingwood in 3 hour 50 minutes. Andy (who had been feeling unwell beforehand) was next in 4 hour 11 minutes followed closely by Allan in 4 hour 16 minutes.

The Collingwood Marathon Club are going their separate ways next week. Allan and Andy are doing the Kent Coastal Marathon in Margate and Steve is joining their 4th member Mel Johnstone for the somewhat longer journey to Moray in Scotland to enter that marathon."

Pathfinder Walk

Results Index   Full Results

Andy reports "Four Collingwood runners took part in the 11th Pathfinder Walk from the village of Conington, Cambridgeshire, along with a good number of '100 Marathon Club' members. The event is named after the 2nd World War Pathfinder Squadrons which flew from airfields in the area and provided routes of 42km, 32km, 23km & 14km, for runners and walkers.

Steve Cooney, Allan Rumbles, Melanie Johnstone and Andy Stalley started together in good overcast conditions around a gently undulating course with no hills to speak of. Steve and Andy soon moved ahead, with Allan and Mel staying together until about 15 miles, when Allan pushed on.

A dead rabbit, a dead mole, a dead hedgehog and very sadly, a dead squirrel littered the course, but provided no obstacle, unlike the bull. Despite the large warning signs, all four Collingwood runners braved a run (at a slightly quickened pace) across a long field, with a very large resident bull. Andy's red t-shirt and Mel's pink jacket, merely added interest to the bull and thankfully not a target.

Steve and Andy ran a steady run together to finish in 4.07, in an unofficial joint first place, being comfortably the first runners or walkers home. Allan completed the course strongly in 4.40 and Mel comfortably in 5.15.

Medals, mugs and a cloth patch were all available at the finish, along with cheap teas & coffees, and very tasty bacon rolls."

54321 Marathon

Results Index   Full Results

Steve reports: "On 10/08/08 the Collingwood Marathon trio of Mel Johnstone, Andy Stalley and Steve Cooney were back in action completing the 54321 marathon in Salisbury. Rob Wilson and Tom Wilkie were seen at the start also.

The marathon's name refers to the 5 Rivers, 4 Hills, 3 Large Country Estates, 2 Castles and 1 Cathedral that the runners had to pass during the route around the Salisbury/Wessex area. The trail run took them past a variety of sites of historical interest and through country estates not usually open to the public.

Andy, Rob and Tom went off at the front of the field with Mel and Steve being a bit more cautious and starting near the back. Mel and Steve caught Rob and Tom at about 2 miles and passed them after being given friendly words of encouragement from the two. Andy though was nowhere to be seen.

Andy continued his recent great form by finishing in 3 hour 44 minutes. Steve was not that far behind in 3 hour 55 minutes. Both were aiming for sub 4 hours so were pleased with their times. Mel came home in 4 hour 42 minutes which meant that all 3 were faster than last years' times.

The fast start from Rob and Tom seemed to have taken its toll and they were both still out on the course some time after so their times are unknown."

Downland 30

Results Index

Steve reports: "On Sunday 20th July, 6 Collingwood runners took part in the Fairlands Challenge Marathon. On Thursday 24th July, 5 of them took part in the 1908 Centenary marathon organised by the 100 Marathon Club. On Sunday 27th July they were down to just 3 survivors who successfully completed the 30 Mile Downland Challenge. This made it a total of 3 marathons in 8 days for the trio of Mel Johnstone, Andy Stalley and Steve Cooney.

They started the ultra marathon in baking sunshine and it got hotter as they climbed the infamous "Ditchling Beacon". The run consisted of running 15 miles mainly along the South Downs Way then 15 miles back. There was a particularly high casualty rate and 15% of the starters pulled out due to the heat.

The heat was no problem for the trio who thought it was good training for their London to Brighton run they have planned for October. Andy Stalley romped home in 25th place in 4 hours 48 minutes. Steve Cooney was next in 35th place in 5 hours 12 minutes. Both were a lot quicker than last year's times. Mel Johnstone just made the top 100 in 6 hours 30 minutes.

All 3 runners have now completed 5 marathons in July and have given themself next week off as a treat! They will then continue on their quest to join the 100 Marathon Club as full members instead of their current status as "wannabe" members (members who have completed 50-99 marathons). The next marathon for all 3 will be the 54321 in Salisbury on 10th August."

Fairlands Valley Challenge

Results Index

Mel reports: "Once again the marathon runners of Collingwood were running on Sunday. This time saw Steve Cooney, Andy Stalley, Melanie Johnstone and Allan Rumbles taking part in the Fairlands Valley Challenge in Stevenage. This was Mr Cooney's 50th marathon so very well done to him!!. It was only three years ago he ran his first.

We started off as a group which lasted about two mins when Andy took the lead, Allan just back from Tunisia and Mel just back from The Military show along with Steve and a few colleagues who we have met at previous marathons took it easy for the first few miles. It wasn't long before Steve also went on in front - he then caught up with Andy at about 8 miles. They then both overtook another two members of Collingwood, Rob Wilson and Tom Wilkie who I didn't see until the end. Steve and Andy ended up having a brilliant run finishing in 4 hours 11mins with no mishaps and a comfortable 50th for steve.

However, back with Mel and Allan it was all very eventful. Mel fell over twice, YES TWICE, once at 12 miles and again at 18-ish. how did I manage to convince Allan that I wasnt drunk? I picked myself up on both occasions and carried on with bumps and scrapes everywhere, people were looking at my leg and saying OH MY GOD! I was thinking of pulling out at one point, it looked like Allan had beat me up. I did feel a bit better when the other guy we were running with also fell over. We took the traditional Collingwood detours, this time only going about a mile out of our way. Allan met a dirty old man at a checkpoint so that was the topic of our conversation until we reached the end in 5 hours 26.

At the finish there were plenty of drinks, water etc and a lovely bbq included very, very good run and beautiful course. Steve is now going to join the 100 marathon club as a wannabee so well done again Steve......

Rob and tom were at the finish but didn't get their time or thoughts on the race."

High Weald Challenge

Results Index

Steve reports: "On Sunday 13/07/08 the Collingwood Marathon trio of Mel Johnstone, Andy Stalley and Steve Cooney attempted the High Weald Challenge. They were again without their 4th member, Allan Rumbles for the 2nd week since he was on holiday (although he did tell the "Guardian" newspaper that he did join them for the Tanners marathon the previous week??).

It started in Goudhurst in Sussex and went into Kent before finishing in Sussex. Written instructions had to be followed to navigate the course. Some runners had difficulty reading the instructions and for the 2nd week running, a Sutton Runner got hopelessly lost and had to be helped out by the Collingwood trio. Dave Ross was their runner this week. He got lost 3 times but fortunately for him managed to find the helpful trio and they pointed him in the right direction each time.

The conditions were sunny and possibly a little too warm for marathon running. The views across the 2 counties were outstanding. The trio got several looks of amazement as they passed through the grounds of Bodiam Castle.

There was food and drinks at the check-points as well as a meal and hot drinks at the end. All this was included in the entry fee.

All 3 were given an official time of 5 hour 15 minutes. For the record, Dave Ross was given a certificate showing an official time of 6 hour 44 minutes. However he felt that he had run rather quicker.

The next marathon is on 20th July and Allan is due to re-join the trio at the Fairlands Challenge in Stevenage where Steve is due to complete his 50th marathon."

Summer Tanners

Results Index

Andy reports: "Mel, Steve and Andy ran the 30 mile Summer Tanners from Leatherhead Football Club, starting in nice conditions. Mel and Steve mocked Andy’s decision to take sunglasses given the grey skies and forecasted rain. Well the rain arrived after 3 miles and stayed for 20 miles. But, the sun did come out briefly for the last mile and glasses were defiantly worn. Conditions were surprisingly good underfoot, but obviously very wet.

Plenty of wildlife seen on the course: a field mouse, a huge snail (which Steve rescued from the path to the safety of a bush), a small herd of stampeding cows, 3 squirrels, pheasants and a wasp. Unfortunately Steve and the wasp did not get on that well and the result was a nasty sting in his thigh.

Unlike last week when Allan abandoned Mel without instructions, Steve and Andy stayed with Mel to escort her to the finish, her 60th marathon and 13th of 2008. Today was Steve’s 48th and Andy’s 69th marathon, and for both their 14th of 2008.

All three finished together in 6 hours and 8 minutes; all a lot quicker than the Winter Tanners in January. There were 5 checkpoints on the course with no food. Mel found a man in the women’s shower after the race, for no additional cost on her entry fee. The 2010 Summer Tanners will sadly be the last."

Herts Hobble

Results Index

Allan reports: "Under a baking hot sky, three members of Collingwood AC lined up for the Herts Hobble today - Andy Stalley, Melanie Johnstone & Allan Rumbles. The race consisted of 3 out & back loops, 11, 8 & 7 miles long, with no marshalls & only written instructions to follow in the countryside surrounding the Hertfordshire town of Buntingford.

We started promptly at 9.30am & we took the usual Collingwood detour at 9.35 am. Fortunately we only went a couple of hundred yards out of our way on that occasion. After we rectified the error Andy took off at a great canter with myself & Mel moving along steadily after him. The first loop was 11 miles long but owing to our misreading of the directions we clocked up 11 1/2 miles when we arrived back at the start/finish area.

Andy had already been & gone by the time Mel & I finished the first loop & we didn't see him again until the finish. The instructions for the 2nd loop were read a bit more carefully & we completed it without getting lost. The third loop went smoothly & I moved away from Mel at the 22 mile mark as I was feeling stronger with each mile. Little did I know though that Mel hadn't picked up a route description for the 3rd loop & she had to run along with another competitor so as to be able to complete the run.

Having the route description did me no favours though as I got lost again with 1 1/2 miles to go. Luckily for me I saw a woman pruning the bushes in her garden so I asked her where I was. Unluckily for me, she was from Canada & only visiting some friends so she was more lost than myself!!!!! Could only happen to me that one...... Found the route again after about 10mins & ran on to complete the race. All in all an excellent event, well organised (LDWA) with a ploughmans & strawberries & cream at the finish. All three used this race as training for the London to Brighton cross country race in October."

Cheltenham Circular Challenge

Results Index   Full Results

Steve reports: "On Sunday 22/06/08 Collingwood Marathon Club were back to full strength when Mel Johnstone, Allan Rumbles, Andy Stalley and Steve Cooney attempted the 13th Cheltenham Circular Challenge in Gloucestershire. The challenge was 4 clockwise sections around Cheltenham and all 4 added together amounted to the full marathon distance.

This was Andy's third marathon in 8 days. Mel and Steve were a bit more sensible and it was their 2nd in 8 days. This was Allan's first since Cork although he did claim to have done the Dartmoor Discovery but he was exposed by "The Post" since he apparently got John Ivers to take his place and he claimed the glory.

The route had spectacular views to The Malverns and Wales. All started
together but after 10 miles Andy went storming off and was not seen until the finish. Navigating using written instructions on uneven ground made conditions difficult. They ran through fields of horses, pigs, sheep and cows. A couple of wrong turnings were taken including one when a herd of cows grouped together to camouflage a gate which they had to run through.

Andy finished in a fine time of just under 5 hours and Mel, Allan and
Steve finished in 5 hour 56 minutes. There were plenty of water stations (but one had run out of water!) and some food. However although they were told about the food they were not told that it had to be purchased so they did not take any cash with them. Although the views were good, most of the time was spent looking at directions or the ground trying not to trip on the uneven ground. It was agreed that this would probably NOT be in the calendar for next year but Andy may well return."

South Downs Marathon

Results Index   Full Results

Mel reports: "Three members of Collingwood continued their marathon trial by taking part in the South Downs Marathon on Sat 14th June. Unfortunately Mr Rumbles was nowhere to be seen - apparently he thought better of it as too many witnesses were about, therefore would have to run and John was unavailable on this occasion. It was a trio consisting of Andy Stalley, Steve Cooney and Mel Johnstone. Steve and Andy had also run every evening during that week taking part in the Rour of Epsom, and poor Andy hadn't had a decent meal inside him that whole week, so was feeling a little malnourished.

The marathon started at Slindon College near Chicester and followed the western side of the South Downs through forest trails, steep chalky paths, grass sections and a little bit of road passsing Arundel Castle to finish in the Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Steve was first home in a great time of 3 hours 52 mins, sprinting the finish and almost overtaking someone on the line, Andy next in 4 hours 7 mins. He wasn't too happy with his time but still a good run for a hard course and no carb load the night before, and Mel with two scraped, bruised knees and elbow after falling over fresh air at 9 miles (wasn't all bad - was rescued by two very nice fit looking men) in 4 hours 56mins.

Thankfully there was loads of water on course and a few stations also had SIS gels and drinks. At the end water and milkshakes were plentiful until Steve arrived as he kept going back for more and more oh and some more. For finishing we all received a medal, t-shirt, shoe bag and a pair of socks. All in all a very well organisied race and thoroughly enjoyable."

(Race posn) Time (Overall posn, Overall Age Group Posn)
Keith started well in 2nd place M40, then consolidated his lead over 3rd and 4th on Thursday and Friday. His 2nd place in age group was one better than last year.
Competition was close between Steve and Andy, with less around 20 or 30s between them on most nights. Martin was in 4th place M45 for the first 3 days, but the ill fortune of the leading M45 runner who DNFd on Wednesday bumped him up a place, finishing 3rd in age group for the second year running. Well done to Lisa and Nicola on completing their first Tour. The words "never again" were to be heard but we'll see.
Things were close between Tom and Nicola for the first couple of days with Tom even to be seen breaking into a sweat, especially when he outsprinted Nicola on Tuesday in the last 10 metres. Wednesday and Thursday were not so good for Tom, but perhaps he was conserving himself for the handicap on the final night, where he was 10th home. 113 completed the week.

Dartmoor Discovery

Results Index   Full Results

Relentless Rumbles reports: "I ran what is billed as Britain's premier road race on Saturday, the notoriously tough Dartmoor Discovery. The 32-mile Ultra Marathon starts & finishes in Princetown near the prison so although it's beautiful scenery it can be a bit desolate in places.
The race started in blazing sunshine but this being Dartmoor I soon encountered the 4 seasons in one day, with sunshine, drizzle and an enormous downpour of hailstones. At this point I had to take shelter under a tree as I was running in just my Collingwood vest & it started to bloody well sting.... The hail was followed by more rain then a bit more sun & then the heavens really opened up & it was torrential rain all the way home until the last mile when the sun came out. (As I say, the sun always shines on the righteous!!!!!!!!).
All in all a superb event, well marshalled, with adequate drink stations, fantastic scenery & a nice memento to take home at the end. Definitely one for next year. Finished in 5hrs 27mins by my Garmin. Oh yes, forgot to say, relentlessly undulating is probably the best description for this event."

Three Forts Marathon

Results Index

Steve reports: "On 4th May Collingwood Marathon Club were represented by just Allan Rumbles and Steve Cooney. They did the Shakespeare Marathon in Stratford last week and took the fairly short trip to Worthing to enter the Three Forts Marathon Challenge. Its motto is "Go the extra mile" which is also the same as Collingwood's motto! The official distance is 27.2 miles. A total climb of 3450 feet included stiles and rough tracks underfoot.
Conditions were dry and hot and Steve finished in 4 hour 7 minutes and Allan in a time of 5 hour 17 minutes.
Next stop on their marathon journey is Halstead in Essex on 11th May where the duo are due to be joined by other members of the club."

Bath Beat Marathon

Results Index

Steve reports: "On 19th April I was the only representative from the "Collingwood Marathon Club" who made the long drive to Somerset to enter the Bath Beat 26.5 mile marathon. This involved navigating through the scenic countryside around Bath and its surrounding villages.

There was no snow this time but it rained all day making the conditions very muddy and slippery. Several runners fell over and injuries included bloodied legs, damaged shoulders and twisted ankles.

I took the usual Collingwood detour but only added an extra mile onto the route. I completed 27.5 miles according to my Garmin and my official time was 5 hours 25 minutes.

My next marathon is 27th April when several other members plan on joining me in Stratford-upon Avon to complete in the Shakespeare Marathon."
