Andy reports: "Day four of the 2018 Saxon Shore Coastal Series @ Pegwell Bay.

After three good days, this would prove to be an eventful run. I had a very slight stiffness in my left shin at start, which simply got worse and worse. By the end of lap six, I had eaten all my painkillers and the pain was intense, affecting my ankle. As nothing that I tried was having an effect I decided to struggle another couple of laps and pull out at 26.2 miles, at least to keep the 10-in-10 alive. On the eighth lap, in desperation, I tried a 200 metre effort, to try to do something to free myself up. Amazingly it worked and I recovered well enough to uncomfortably go on until 50km. Outside six hours, 6:01:23, in eleventh place, but far more importantly the 50km challenge is still on! However, my shin is red, swollen, painful and not looking good. Lots of RICE, as tomorrow is another day!

PS - I did not start day five, my leg became very colourful, stiff and swollen overnight. The consensus of opinion is it could be a stress fracture. The really frustrating thing is that otherwise I have no stiffness or after effects from the first four days, and I am not tired. "

Andy reports: "Day three of the 2018 Saxon Shore Coastal Series @ Samphire Hoe
This was my first ultra treble and comfortably my longest ever treble, so I am now moving into the unknown. It was colder and windier today, so I wore a thicker jacket, and unusually for me I kept hat and gloves on throughout. Same basic strategy, but I decided not to fight the wind, content to be slower. I was very happy to run well again, very consistent lap pacing and with my fastest laps being the last two. After 5:41 and 5:39, today was 5:41 again (5:41:52), which was a nice outcome. Ninth today and one of 36 who have run all three days so far, 27 of whom have run at least a marathon each day."

Andy reports: "Day two of the 2018 Saxon Shore Coastal Series @ Samphire Hoe. Same course as yesterday, but cooler, damper and breezier. I wanted to run the same pace and strategy as yesterday, but happy to be a bit slower, due to the conditions. I settled well, ran comfortably and controlled with almost equally paced laps. Finished in 5:39:28 in 7th place, two minutes quicker than yesterday with a lower heart rate and feeling better after finishing. Legs strong today and running within myself, so very pleased with today."

Andy reports: "Day one of the 2018 Saxon Shore Coastal Series @ Samphire Hoe. After two successful ten-in-ten attempts in the last year, I decided to try to run 50km each day this time, as a bit more of a personal challenge. My aim is to start slow and stay slow each day, conserving myself, looking to finish around 5:30 to 5:40. Today, in decent weather conditions, it all went to plan and I ran a comfortable and controlled race, finishing in 5:41:18 in 8th place. My Garmin distance was 31.55 miles, so reasonably long. A good start, only 280 miles to go!"

Andy reports: “A different course from two years ago, replacing the park section with a harbour side section. An enjoyable four lap course, with a series of other races, 400m and 800m for kids, 5km run and walks, 10km run and walks, half marathon and relay. Typical well organised but relaxed German marathon.

We had managed to park and sleep less than a hundred yards from the start/finish, which was helpful. Three other brits, two from the 100 Club, all of whom finished ahead of me.
I ran a solid first half, faded on the third lap and struggled to stay sub-4 on the last lap. Unusually for me, probably because of my poor breathing, the race took it out of me and I was rough after the finish.”

Andy reports: “Despite being a night marathon, we started at twenty-nine degrees and finished at twenty-five. A slightly different course to two years ago, but still an excellent well organised event.

I went off well, but with hindsight in the heat and with my breathing, too fast. Bad spell at 24km, terrible spell at 30km, then it all went downhill. Really struggling at 36km, and by 39km I had mild cramp in both calves, strong cramp in both quads and horrible cramp across my stomach. I was just glad to finish.”

"Day Ten, Saturday 7th July 2018
Clover - 26.2 miles (road)
I took the option of an early start, just in I was going to be slow. Well I smashed my personal worst marathon time by over an hour, 7:05, in my personal worst finish position, with my worst ever age-grading.
By 0.2 miles, running was impossible, as my left ankle was so painful. So I basically walked the last 26 miles.
I was rescued after six miles by the RD, along with others as stroppy villagers changed the course signs sending some the field the wrong way as we had the cheek to run on public roads through their village!
By mile 17, I was grateful for a large dose of painkillers, as walking was getting very unpleasant. I walked the last four miles with a mate with a dodgy right ankle. We both decided to jog the last 40 yards and that was agony.
I would not have started if it was not day ten of an event that had beaten me before. It was not going to beat me twice, it did not.
PS: Having spent a fair bit of Sunday in hospital, it turns out I had cellulitis in the same ankle on top of the ligament injury. Now on antibiotics with a large read ankle and foot! I know, don't say it, Gill already has!"

Great Barrow Challenge - Circle

"Day Nine, Friday, 6th July 2018
The Circle - 26.6 miles (70%road/30%trail)
I had a slightly swollen left ankle at the start, but both ankles freed up quickly. I ran well to half way, the quickest since day two, feeling good Then by left ankle became increasingly painful and tight. Leaving CP4, it went and I was in real pain and real trouble. At CP5, the paramedic had me on the deck as he strapped and gelled my ankle. It was Impossible for me to run, so I walked home, the last 6.5 miles. At one point, I thought I was going to be sick, due to the pain and the heat. Finished in 5:58. I have seen the paramedic and have a care plan, for a simple overuse injury. Obviously, starting tomorrow is not too sensible. So, I have booked an early start time of 7am with a friend and the paramedic will visit Didi and strap me up. Nine down, not going to let pain stop me from trying! I actually feel fine, my legs are good, my right ankle has cleared up. Who needs two ankles? I know, don’t say it! "

"Day Eight, Thursday, 5th July 2018
Wickhambrook - 26.6 miles (70% road/30% trail)
Another very hot and undulating day, with a nose cold. Both ankles were stiff at the start, especially the right one. I could see how my right toes were not coming up properly and my Garmin foot strike balance went way into the red! I never got going and approaching the third checkpoint my running style and speed had gone. My ankles ached and I was not in a good place. I did a visualisation exercise combined with a bit of a mental talking to and I starting running a lot better. Somehow I maintained that to the end, finishing in 5:36. I ran the second half quicker than the first, but that was so slow! My ankles are currently stiff and I have just discussed with Gill how I will drive home? Don’t have an answer to that yet!"

Great Barrow Challenge - GBC Village

"My 300th marathon today.

Day Seven, Wednesday, 4th July 2018
GBC Village - 26.0 miles (70% road/30% trail).
The coolest morning of the event for an out/back course, typically undulating. My right Achilles was again stiff at the start, taking nearly four miles to free. I was deliberately slow, intent on finishing, and things went generally well. The last three miles were however uphill and really hard as both ankles pretty much locked up and I tired in the heat. Running was not pleasant. Day seven in the bank, but more importantly this was my 300th completed Marathon and Ultra. Nice feeling to cross the line. At the moment, pulling my feet up is difficult, particularly the left one, so a hilly, long and forecast hot day tomorrow is not looking easy."

"Day Six, Tuesday, 3rd July 2018
Newmarket - 26.6 miles (80% road/20% trail). Another hot and undulating day, but thankfully back to the cooler 8am start. I started relatively well, aiming to back off in the second half. I had a slight temperature and a very runny nose before the start, so not an ideal recovery from the attritional run yesterday. My right Achilles was so tight at the start, but thankfully eased after a couple of miles. I tied up a fair bit at the end, but was really backing off by then. 5:23, but not a great run, ok, but for the first time the effort was telling. Six days of the heat, which is not good for me, but getting there slowly. I had a short sit on the bench in Newmarket after 15 miles, where I DNF’ed on in 2015: good to be able to run passed it this year."

Clover - 26.2 miles (road)
Good news was that it was a slightly flatter course than yesterday and with a little more breeze. However, the sun was out earlier and was much stronger, there was less shade, it was more humid and very hot. Abandoned my slow and steady strategy at mile ten, adopted a very slow and very steady strategy. Good call, as I finished ok. Felt better at the finish than day two, but quite stiff in the afternoon. Drank over four litres during the race, but I was still parched at the end."

Kirtling - 26.2 miles (road)
Three weeks of enforced tampering due to my chest infection meant I needed yesterday to clear the ring rust. Mild nose cold, but otherwise a much better run than day one. Undulating course, sunny and hot, but I ran a controlled run, feeling more comfortable throughout. 4:55, taking it slowly according to plan, was a pleasing outcome. Felt better after finishing too, so encouraging for the next eight days."

Day One, Thursday, 28th June 2018
The Circle - 26.6 miles (road/trail)
In 2015, I seized up after 15.41 miles on day eight of the Great Barrow Challenge, (10-in-10). This year, is my first opportunity to return and beat the GBC. Only one aim, to finish.
Undertrained, under-raced, overweight, with unresolved breathing problems and getting over my second chest infection in six months, so given the undulating courses and forecast hot and sunny weather, my plan was to go very slow and conserve my energy. I woke up with a runny nose and a bit of a cough, with some chest pain, so that was helpful! Stuck to plan, not a great run, but finished without too many issues, in 5:01. 10% complete."

Andy reports: "Lovely little German marathon, with undercard of 400m, 1km, 2km, two 6km, 10km, half & 30km. Four laps through the High Street, over the dyke and along the sea front, around a fort, back over the dyke onto a cycle path and back through town. Due to the timing of the other distances, we ran the first lap with the 30km’ers and relay.

Half marathoners out for the second and third laps with the 6km walkers and 10km runners out on the fourth lap. Low key event, but well organised and marshalled. My four laps with 56:16, 56:09, 56:16 & 56:26, so I was very pleased with that consistency. 3:45:11 on my Garmin, which given my current lack of training and continued poor breathing was really pleasing.

We managed to sleep less than a hundred yards from the start/finish, so ideal for Gill, who cycled part of the course. Sunny throughout and it got up to 20 degrees, so by far the warmest run of the year for me. Enjoyable event, worth a return in the future."
