Portsmouth Coastal Waterside Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: "I had a reasonable run at the Portsmouth Coastal Waterside Marathon, my 200th marathon. A slightly different, but a better route than last year, which is now totally out and back; my Garmin had the distance at 26.61 miles.

A couple of stretches of beach, lots of muddy trails and paths, with some road sections, taking us from Southsea to Hayling Island. Quite windy at times with occasional rain and hail. Steve Cooney ran his 201st marathon today, but suffered a little in the second half."

November Nightmare - D6 - Lightmoor Course - 26.2 Miles

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Day six of the November Nightmare was held on the Lightmoor course, near Ironbridge, as days one and three. However, it was a lot wetter, including a large puddle across the whole road at the foot of the first hill. I may have overstated my fitness to Gill before the start, however I was really suffering with my cold, which had gone on to my chest, along with a high temperature. By lap 13, I was totally struggling. I should have stopped at half way, but the support and spirit amongst the runners and organisers kept me going. The second half of the race was a nightmare, literally. I have never felt as rough during a race and never dug so deep before, not helped by a cramped right thigh and a tough course. I suppose I should have realised it was a challenging event, as it is organised by ‘How hard can it be events!’ I have never been so glad to finish a race.”

November Nightmare - D5 - Coalport Course - 28 Miles

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Day five was held back on the Coalport course, near Ironbridge, as day four, so 28 miles, and again slighter wetter after the overnight rain. The forecast was for rain and heavy rain, but thankfully only some drizzle until 24 miles, when it did rain. I paced myself to half way, then ran stronger than day four and finished just about three minutes quicker, trying to stay within myself and save something for day six. 136 miles completed, just 26.2 to go! The event is clearly slowing everyone and the leader pulled out injured early today. Carrying a few niggles still, full of a cold and my IT band is suffering, so looking forward to getting through day six."

November Nightmare - D4 - Coalport Course - 28 Miles

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Day four was held back on the Coalport course, near Ironbridge. Slightly different start position, so 28 miles, and slighter wetter after the overnight rain. I was really happy to start after the way I finished day three, and happier to get through to mile 25 before it went again. I had deliberately paced myself slowly, trying to stay off the camber where possible and I think it worked. I was very clear that everyone was getting slower as the week went on, but the spirit amongst the field and organisers had grown."

November Nightmare - D3 - Lightmoor Course

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Day three of the November Nightmare was held on the Lightmoor course, near Ironbridge, as day one. I decided to take it easy as I had tied up badly on day two, which was working fine until lap 27, when a niggle in my right knee became suddenly horrible. I had to hobble/walk the last five laps to finish which was not pleasant. Disappointing time, but no damage done apart from my knee, which I think is the IT band.”

November Nightmare - D2 - Coalport Course - 27.5

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Day two was held on the Coalport course, near Ironbridge. Basically three out and backs on a disused railway track that had been tarmacked, making it technically a road ultra, and pretty flat. However, the road surface was worn, making trail shoes appropriate. I had no stiffness or after effects from day one, so started optimistically. However, I started slowly and after half way got slower. The last return leg was a struggle, not through a lack of energy, but my legs were simply not flowing. Lap counting by wearing arm bands. Another friendly and well organised event."

November Nightmare - D1 - Lightmoor Course - 26.2

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Day one of the six-in-six November Nightmare was held on the Lightmoor course, near Ironbridge. Basically 32 laps of 0.84 miles on a circular country lane, making it technically a road marathon. However, the road surface was badly worn, so rocks, pot holes, gravel, gullies, mud, puddles and leafs, making trail shoes necessary. The lap was 0.15 miles of upslope, 0.14 miles of uphill, 0.10 miles of downhill, 0.11 miles of uphill and 0.34 miles of gradual downhill; so 64 reasonable hills in total and never flat. Heavy cold, under-trained and a few niggles meant I ran steadily, trying to preserve energy for the next five days. I finished in 4:34:00, which given the circumstances was better than I hoped for. Very friendly checkpoint, which was at the end of each lap, where a hole punch was used to mark your lap counting card. Nice spirit amongst the field as you repeatedly lapped people or were lapped. Unusual hexagonal medal and a good hoodie for all entrants of the full Nightmare."

Andy reports: "This was another proper big city marathon, which was run in good conditions. The course went through the city centre twice on a nice route. A real contrast to Amsterdam last week, I only saw one other English runner and the rest of the field ran in silence, so an odd atmosphere even when there were good crowds. Strangely relaxed starting pen organisation and then equally casual road closures. A really good finish inside the Messe (exhibition centre) ran on a blue carpet, lights and a big screen. I ran the first half faster and more comfortably than last week, then tied up worse than last week, struggling to finish quicker than in Amsterdam."

Andy reports: "This was a proper big city marathon, which was unfortunately run in constant drizzle. It was really congested getting into the Olympic Stadium for the start, but once inside it was really well organised. I bumped into some 26.2RRC members in my start pen and Gill saw Tadworth AC runners on the course, as Gill's foot prevented her from running the 8km. The course was mostly south of the main city centre, but did pass some landmarks on the way to the out and back sections along the river. I started slowly and never got into a good pace, slowing in the second half. Very enjoyable finish entering and running around the track of the Olympic Stadium. The field was full of English runners, so I chatted to dozens of people along on the way, making it more like a home event."

Andrew Griffin Mile

Road Results Index  Full Results

Well done to our champions for this year, Oliver Collis and Lisa Rooney. It stayed mostly dry in the end after an awful lot of rain earlier and the contributions of the runners made a good few pounds for the British Heart Foundation. Thank you to Andrew's wife Gill for presenting the shields.

Gill: "Many thanks to Collingwood for last night's Memorial Mile and for letting Rebecca and our very close friends take part. The collection raised £73 which, with Gift Aid, makes the best part of £100. The money is safely with the BHF."

Tim reports: "No official results yet but 58 44 by my watch. A really nice local run (Selsdon), some steep hills at start and finish, some nice little trail sections in amongst the pavements, very well marshalled and organized. Medal, lucozade, and free hot drink after (which was very welcome as it was a trifle damp). Again an inaugural run, again hopefully to be repeated next year, but possibly on a different weekend."

Leeds Castle Tri

Road Results Index  Full Results

Total 2:33:06 38th Place, 2nd M50-59

Bill reports: "My furthest distance so far and really enjoyed it, although it is a challenging course for all the disciplines. The swim was a zig-zag course in the moat, 2 laps and involved swimming through an arch in the castle on each lap, let’s just say it was eventful and leave it at that.

Bike course was undulating and nearer 42K but no silly hills, on straight wide roads, so you could keep up an even pace. I had a good ride and picked off quite a few people.

The run was a hilly cross-country course , two 5k laps and a lot tougher than I envisaged. The hill at 1k and 6k had most people walking, although funny enough I ran most of it on the 2nd lap.

Overall a great day, sunny, beautiful location, and beat my target time on one of the toughest UK courses."

Ocean Lake Tri

Road Results Index  Full Results

Bill reports: "The Ocean Lake Tri was the 3rd in a series of 6 on Saturday mornings over the summer, and based just off the M20 near Maidstone at Leybourne Country Park. It is a really well organised event run by a club at the lake, and had chip timing for the first time yesterday.

With crystal water in the lake, a great bike course, undulating not hilly on local roads and an off-road run around the lake, it really is the perfect set-up for triathlons.

I was pleased overall, coming out of the swim in 35th place, definite room for improvement there, but made good time and places on the bike and run to finish in 21st place.

Lessons learnt today, don’t get bullied in the swim and know where your kit is in transition coming in off the bike. A good start for the summer and now looking forward to an Olympic distance event at Leeds Castle at the end of the month."

Luxembourg Night Marathon

Road Results Index

Andy reports: “I ran the superb night marathon in Luxembourg on Saturday night; which included a half marathon, a marathon relay, a 5km and a mini marathon. This is a brilliant race where the whole city comes together to stage and support the event. There are massive road closures, bus routes cancelled and this is clearly one of the most logistically challenging city marathons to stage, which Luxembourg is rightly proud of. There are bands along the route, cheer stations, hot air balloons, and in places, they had set up stalls for burgers, drinks, etc. meaning these areas were real hotspots.

The event starts at the exhibition centre (LuxExpo) at the end of Kirchberg, their equivalent of Canary Wall passing the European Union court buildings and parliament. Then a small loop of a northern suburb, through huge crowds, before cutting through a lovely city park, then heading into the city centre, passing just about every major building and tourist attraction along the way. The crowds are really supportive and adopt the orange colours of the sponsor ING, who are headquartered in the city. ING provide a huge amount of free material (all orange) to spectators and provide a huge number of staff as marshals.

We split from the half marathon field in the city centre before heading out through two lovely parks, and a longer a tour of the eastern suburbs, where the crowds were quite thin, but where all the local kids came out to support the runners, setting up unofficial drinks stations. At dusk, we dropped down into the deep valley that splits the city in half, running a mile along the river, until just after 31km, when you start to climb back up, which you seem to do for most of the last 11km.

Through the city centre again, still with great support, then back through Kirchberg to finish inside the expo building. The finish has strobe lighting, lasers, smoke, music, etc., on matting and with huge support; this was a real buzz. And there was a remote controlled airship flying over the finish inside the expo.

The excellent goodie bag, pasta party and all the supporting material make this an excellent value for money event. The Expo and post event party was still in full swing when we left at midnight.

In terms of my run, I had one of those days, where if it could go wrong, it did! For some unknown reason, I had serious bruising under my left foot inside the first 3km, which was so painful from 6km onwards. That meant I tried to land on the inside of my left foot, twisting my stride, resulting in cramp in the right calf from half way and severe cramp in my right quad from 31km. I also had kit problems, stomach cramps and three really rough spells. So comfortably inside 3:30 pace at 30km, I hobbled in, in a time of 3:38:39, in 180th place. Just to finish a poor run, my Garmin completely died at 26 miles.

This is a truly great event, now one of my all-time favourite marathons, but this was not a great race for me personally. If you are thinking of doing a European big city marathon, give this one a go; great course, excellent crowds, superb organisation and great value for Money. Luxembourg is a great city to visit as well, making it well worth the trip."

Starfish Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports:"I ran the first Starfish Marathon starting and finishing from the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea. A lovely and friendly charity event where most of the entry fee goes to a Special School; raising over £3,200 so far.

Kids races held before the Marathon and four person relay with a half marathon with a two person relay. Simple four lap course heading west for 1.5 miles around a cone and then west, up and down a small hill, before rising to another cone. Plenty of drinks stations and excellent marshals, who given that you pass them all eight times, became friends and the banter made the event really enjoyable. Great course for spectators too.

Good weather and small fields meant good running. I slowed slightly from 20 miles, still not over my cold, to finish sixth in 3:32:19.

Relatively cheap, good cause, good course and excellent marshals, I'll definitely return in 2016."

Bewl Water Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Tony reports: "On Saturday, myself and Ercole ran the Bewl Water marathon, organised by Mel and Dave Ross. Josh, Gary and Paul (in a welcome return) ran the half. Ones for those who prefer their races off-road, they are picturesque trail races around an enormous lake in Kent, and extremely well organised, with lots of feed stations and plenty of signs, so almost impossible to get lost (although Josh managed to).

Ercole and I ran the first 5 miles or so together, comfortably in the top 10 (yikes!), before he backed off a little, I think to save a little for the Hackney half the next day. I felt quite strong, so pressed on, and was happy to pass a few towards the end, and dip under 3.30. But I did suffer a disappointment normally reserved for much better athletes than me - I missed a spot on the podium by one place! If only one of those other 3 had taken a wrong turning, but the signs were just too damn good."

Milton Keynes Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: "The race HQ is the MK Stadium, which is an excellent venue. The ten miles were out and back sections on dual carriageways and town centre roads, before we split from the Half Marathoners. Then footpaths back to the Stadium. No hills, but many, many little ups and downs, with lots and lots of twists and turns. Not a scenic course, but alright. A little stiff from the first day of my double, so aimed for sub-4, which I was able to pace myself to."

Orchid River Run 5k

Road Results Index

Tim reports: "Whilst I enjoyed myself charging round St Paul's and the South Bank the event was cheerful carnage. Meeting Ercole on his way home from work was the last thing that went well. With both 5k and 10k events a malfunctioning PA masked some of the instructions, and I feared for the organizer when she tried to stop all the 10k runners going of at once (there were supposed to be waves) by walking out in front of 50 or so runners with her arms stretched out. Some people went round her, but thankfully no trampling!

The last 10k group went out, clearly joined by some of 5k runners. After they had gone it transpired us 5k'ers were starting in the opposite direction on a slightly different first 500m. As we passed St Paul's we ran into dazzling sunlight, there may have been signs but no one could see them, 5 minutes later a group of a dozen plus of us found our way back to the River, via a short excursion through a building site! Soon we were running past runners going in the opposite direction - but the route is a loop so I turned back at 2.5k by my Garmin convinced (rightly it transpired) we were going the wrong way, the marshals seemed quite cheerful though - telling us we were going the right way, regardless of direction of travel.

On the way back I overshot the required final turn (later I was told the Marshal on the last corner had done up their coat because they were cold, hiding his race t-shirt and was not to keen on pointing, but did direct if people they stopped). If you want a smoothly run race - maybe not this one - if you want to dash around central London, and raise a bit of charity cash, you could still have fun, which I did. Oh and they did have doughnuts......"

Shakespeare Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: "It is a few years since I was able to make it to Stratford-upon-Avon for the Shakespeare Marathon, one of my favourite events, so it was great to return. The course had changed a little at the start, a slightly different loop of the town centre and the finish was slightly moved in the park, but still basically the same event.

I remembered one of the hills, but had forgotten some of the other lumps and bumps. However, I woke up with a streaming nose cold, that came from absolutely nowhere. I still stuck to plan, but felt warm and my heart rate was clearly up. All was fine, until the cold caught up with me on the disused railway tack, called "The Greenway" from twenty miles. I slowed and slowed, but knew I could still get under 3:30, so struggled in. 3:29:15 in 101st place was pleasing in the circumstances."

Manchester Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: "I ran the Manchester Marathon today, a nice event. I started too quickly, but felt comfortable so decided to sit at that pace. The 3:29 pacer passed me at 10km and I stuck with him until 13 miles, by which time I was feeling strong, so I pushed on ahead of him.

As the race went on I felt stronger and stronger, ending up running a negative split by 1:44. The course was tight in places in the first half, but freer in the second. Pretty flat, but not very scenic. Really pleased with my official time of 3:24:32 in 1573rd place. However, my Garmin time was quicker and the finish clock and gun times did not match.

The mile markers were misleading as well. Getting on for 15 minutes quicker than last week, felt stronger during the race and much more comfortable after the run; so well pleased."

Berlin Half

Road Results Index  Full Results

Tony reports: "Myself and Mrs.T have just returned from a fantastic long weekend in Berlin, taking in the half marathon. For a big city race, it was reasonably cheap to enter, and very easy to self-organise (EasyJet, Hotels.com, etc). Usual big race slick operation throughout, with registration on the Saturday at the iconic, former Templehof Airport.

Unlike many other races, the start is right in the city centre, so it was a little chaotic trying to reach my starting pen, with 25,000 runners + supporters squeezed into such a small space. Having managed that though, the race was great - dead flat, fantastic crowds, and passing through some pretty cool spots (Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, etc). I even managed my best half marathon time in more than 10 years, so very happy with that. The finish had the usual well-organised succession of medal - space blanket - cups of water. But everyone, and I mean everyone, was bypassing the water for the next table along – free beer!"

Freiburg Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: “When I found out that there was a marathon in Freiburg in Germany, on the Sunday of the same week that I retired, I just had to do it; feeling free and doing a marathon in a city with ‘Frei’ in the name was just too good a coincidence. So Gill and I drove down in our new motorhome, ‘Didi’ and registered on Saturday at the ‘Messe’, the Freiburg version of ‘Excel’, where there was a nice expo and a free pasta party.

On Sunday morning, we cycled from our campsite to the start at the Expo where the whole centre had been dedicated to the event, which included a half marathon, a marathon relay and a junior race. There was a changing hall, a bag drop room, a food & drink room and the Expo.

The Marathon is basically two laps, pretty flat with no hills, just a couple of upslopes. You run through some new developments, a few suburbs, down a river, through the historic town centre over cobbles and back to the Expo. Lots of drink stations, toilets, support and full road closures including cutting the tram routes in half. Given I can only pace myself in miles, having kilometre markers was interesting, but enjoyable as the kilometre markers pass more quickly. The event’s tag line is “Run & Rock”, as there are 42 bands on the course, all of which you pass at least twice, some four times.

I ran steadily through half way, feeling comfortable, then had a really rough spell, losing all pace and momentum; no idea why, but it was not pleasant. The weather was cool and breezy, with drizzle at the start of both laps. The second lap was more exposed as the majority of the field were only doing the half marathon.

At the 32km marker, I decided to try to push on and get a better time, as I was running poorly. Surprisingly, I started to pick up and run freer. By 36km, I was running as quickly as I had at the start and then got steadily quicker. The last 2.2km was my quickest segment of the course, by some distance, which might have been aided by the two ‘lager stations’ at 39km and 40km; probably not a surprise as the headline sponsor was a local brewery. No idea how I recovered, never had such a dip and such a recovery before.

I finished in 3:43:34, feeling really good. I was officially 410th and 54th in my age category. I collected my medal and went into a hall where there were local rolls and a lovely sultana bread to refuel on. Two sides of the hall had beer tables; never actually saw any water! I was slightly delayed meeting up with Gill, by about a pint; I recommend all the three beers on offer.

We sat down in the food hall for a coffee and local cakes, a lovely strawberry cheesecake and an equally lovely apple and custard pie; then after some of the presentations, a local singer came on stage and gave a free concert, apparently he is really popular. The Freiburg Marathon is a lovely event, well organised and a substantial commitment by the city and organisers; I hope to come back again."

Marsden March

Road Results Index

Maria reports: "Alan, Victoria and I did the Marsden March today. Our coach to Fulham was at 10a.m and we were told to arrive 15 mins earlier. We arrived on time and was ushered to our coach with military precision. (no wonder they call it a march).

On arrival at Fulham, after a comfort break, we were off at 11a.m! Alan was dressed as Olaf from the Disney Frozen film which spread lots of happiness on this emotional event. On route, reading walkers stories written on their backs really brought a lump to our throats. The mile markers were eagerly anticipated but Wimbledon Common was at the front of our minds as this meant lunch (egg mayo rolls -yummy). We carried on down through Raynes Park and on towards King Georges park at the 9 mile mark. at 8 1/2 miles there was a hoot and a hollar from a passing car. (how on earth did Gill and Andy see us among 5000 people) but we are glad they did, as they lifted our spirits.

On through Nonsuch Park we were all feeling the strain but knew there were not too many miles to go. In Cheam village we spotted another two volunteers we recognised (Tony and Beverley Barry). What an incredible job all the marshalls did.

A mile to go and the excitement for the finish built and so did the discussion for our dinner. we can see the finish line and the realisation of what we have done is sinking in. we were met at the finish by Elizabeth and my mum. Wow its emotional! We have finished our journey for cancer and many people are just beginning their battle against this disease. We sincerely hope what we have raised will help them on their journey."

Andy reports: "We stayed in the car park, overlooking the beach and looking directly at the start 100 yards away. The course (the same both days) was out 3.28 miles on the tarmac top of the sea defensive wall from Birchington-on-Sea, totally flat, all the way until you touch the gate at the ‘Reculver Tower’ and then run back to the start; repeated four times to make the marathon distance. So you are always passing runners in the opposite direction, which was fun and generated a good spirit. Good to see Mel running well both days, getting her fitness back.

Saturday was the harder day, running out in to a constant 20-30mph wind, so it felt like a downhill on the way back with the wind behind me. 40-60 seconds difference in pace on the out and back legs. Sunday was much more even barely a breeze on the first two outs, a little more on the last two. Five degrees on Saturday, but with the wind chill it felt a lot colder, two degrees on Sunday, which felt a lot warmer that the day before.

I decided to run steadily on Saturday to enable me to run to at least half way on Sunday and then see how far I could get without walking. I expected to walk on Sunday. So very happy with 4:06 on Saturday and 4:10 on Sunday, under 4 minutes slower; running both events non-stop.

Gill cycled into Margate on Saturday to do the parkrun there. She cycled with me for sections of the second half of both events."
