Portsmouth Coastal Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: "Don't know if anyone else has reported yet but Steve, Mel, Dave Freeborn and myself ran the Portsmouth Coastal Marathon yesterday. I managed to start late again, about 10 minutes behind everyone else due to the chaotic registration hall crowds.

The head wind for the last 2 miles was tough but I didn't have a particular time in target anyway. I was surprised at around 23 miles as well when the route went through the sea to ankle depth for a short stretch. There is a cut-off of 6 hours in order to ensure that the route is not cut off by the sea so I guess this got worse for those behind unless the organisers got the tide times wrong.

New year's resolution is to start races on time."

Dinton Duathlon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Rupert reports: "This morning, I took part in the inaugural Lexus Dinton Duathlon, held at Dinton Pastures Country Park near Reading. It was made up of an approximately 5k run, a 19k bike ride, and a repeat of the 5k run.

The run course was within the Country Park, and was a single lap that skirted the lakes. It was almost completely flat and consisted mostly of stony paths. The bike course was on mostly very quiet roads, that undulated gently and were without any major hills.

There were 173 individual finishers, and 25 relay teams, and the start of the first run leg was divided into 2 waves, 10 minutes apart, of about 100 runners each. From the results it is clear that the organisers used predicted finishing times to put the faster competitors in the first wave. I was, of course, in the second wave.

This was the first time I have tried this distance, so I took the first run fairly easily, and I was happy to complete the second run quicker than the first, and also to complete the course in just a few seconds inside my target of 2 hours.

At the finish, everyone received an attractive and unusual medal and a cycling water bottle. The male and female winners were awarded a Lexus watch. My daughter, as second lady, received a small trophy, a golf umbrella and a flask.

The event was well marshalled, and seemed to be well run overall. The entry fee was £40. I can recommend it and I would be happy to do it again next year."

Steve reports: "A few from Collingwood did the Path 'N' Downs Marathon/Half today.

Mark Constantinou had a great running finishing in 11th place in 3hrs19 mins 33 secs (3hr 19mins 37 gun time) closely followed by his brother Antony in 3hr 21 mins 04 (gun time 3hr 22 exactly). He came 17th.

Andy Randall and myself decided to give everybody else a 22 mimute lead. Andy came 56th in 3hr 23 mins 39 secs but his gun time was 3 hr 45 mins 04. I came 89th in 3 hr 37 mins 42 secs and gun time was 3hr 59 mins 7 secs. Mel did 5hr 11 mins and 9 secs (gun time 5hr 12mins exactly).

Chris Sinfield did the half in an impressive time of 1hr 54mins 10 secs (gun time 1 hr 54 mins 40 secs)."

Poppy Half

Road Results Index  Full Results

Congrats to Emily who ran her first half marathon in a great time (despite not being called Richard).

Richard R reports: "This was the first time I have run a half marathon with multiple laps. I must admit I found it really difficult because after the first time round you know what to expect for the other three laps! However, this was a thoroughly enjoyable race. The support at the end was fantastic and a big thank you to the two Richards, Alison, Rachel and Emily without whom I would never have finished in one of my better times.

It was relatively flat apart from a short sharp ramp you have to climb up each time. Most of the route is based along the sea front which seems to go on for ever in one direction but when you turn around it feels like you get to the end in half the time for some reason. The weather was great for November, on a wet and windy day it would be quite challenging running along the sea front.

On the down side I did not think it was one of the most organised races I have ever attended. We parked up in plenty of time to collect our numbers but there was no signage displayed as to where to go. We had to ask a couple of people along the way. Also I think there could have been one or two more stops for water. Basically at the end of each lap there were small cups which meant stopping briefly too.

Great medal and tee shirt and overall well worth the money though. A great day out and I would recommend this one to all."

Great South Run

Road Results Index  Full Results

Tony reports: "I ran the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth today. 20,000 runners, great atmosphere, fantastic crowds all the way round, and a pancake flat course. I was a little disappointed with my time of 69'30'', as I was on course for a sub 68' up until 8 miles. Then someone switched on a Wind Tunnel - up to level 11! I lost over a minute in 2 miles!
I think there were a few Collingwooders there, cos I got a couple of shouts from the crowd, but I didn't bump into any of them."

Box Hill Original Sportive

Road Results Index

Alison reports: "So, a few of us had a go at the Box Hill Original Sportive short distance (44 miles) today. Bill kindly cycled with me for the entire course.

Richard and Leka were supporting - they popped up at Brockham, Newdigate and at the top of Box Hill to check we were okay and had hot tea for us at the finish.

The conditions were atrocious - torrential rain, flooding and debris everywhere from the outset. Six of us started but only four finished.

Here are our results:
Silver standard - Catherine Gaskell - 02:53:12
Bronze standard - Gary Thompson - 03:15:33
Bronze standard - Alison Fox - 03:44:13
Bronze standard - Bill Walsh - 03:44:13

Maggie and Chris started but had to pull out at 10 miles due to mechanical failure."

Mary reports: "I ran this yesterday. It was the first of a 6 race series that take place each month. I finished 3rd lady in 42:30.

It was a nice course in a beautiful park but I'm not sure I'll make the early morning trip across London again for the other races. It is expensive for a low key event - £14 for a race number and chip, some mumbled directions at the start and nothing at the end of the race.

They also messed up the course route for the final lap so it was about 200m too long, and had the finish mat helpfully located on a stretch of slippery grass which upset some of the more serious people who like to sprint at the end (not me)!"

The course is best described as undulating. It has many flat stretches, but there are some hilly sections to make the race a bit more interesting. The final 1.5 miles Long Walk is particularly impressive. The impressive sight of Windsor Castle in the distance beyond the finish line is quite outstanding and not something many will forget quickly.”

Berlin Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Jude reports: "Just thought I'd let you know how I got on in Berlin last weekend, 29th September. I about matched last years time with 5hr 25min 32sec. I was on course for a new pb until 30k when my right knee gave up, am now having physio on it - physio thinks I have strained my IT band so following recovery orders to the letter with the hope of completing York marathon on Sunday 20th.

Berlin was a great course as usual, ending through the Brandenburg gate never fails to make me smile. The crowds are great in Berlin not as big as London but equally encouraging. Wonderful organisation, fresh apples, bananas, powerade, water and even warm lemon tea on the way round - with one lot of gels if that's what you fancy around 30k.

I did say this year would be my last year in Berlin having done it 4 years in a row but have a sneaky suspicion I will be going back next year!"

Alison reports: "Today my Richard and Richard & Rachel Tanner ran the Tonbridge Half Marathon. I was supporting.

The race director had very kindly transferred my number to Rich after I emailed to ask whether Rich could take my place as I wasn't able to run due to injury.

On the day conditions were very good - overcast with a light breeze - although perhaps a little humid. Sadly this year Dame Kelly Holmes wasn't able to be there to start the race and hand out medals at the finish!

Rich managed to win a spot prize and we came away with a rather nice bottle of red wine!"

Kent Coastal Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Mel reports: "I was very undecided as to whether to run or not, I needed to as have done no training for the past 2-3 months. So I started, the first 5-6 miles were fine, and all seemed to be going well. I was taking it really easy as did not want to aggravate anything. At about 8 miles I was feeling very different my pulled calf muscle from 3 weeks ago was starting to hurt and the pelvic area is still not right. Shall I pull out at half way??? I kept thinking yes that is the sensible thing to do.

I passed through half way and something just kept me going past, I was determined to finish my first marathon in quite some time. This was not the most sensible decision I have made because at about 14 miles I found myself not being able to run at all, I walked the remaining 11 miles, passing many friendly faces on route, including Andy Randall who seemed quite shocked that he was just passing me, asking if I was ok, then Paul Cooper who asked if my legs were dead, something like that I said. It felt strange to be at the back but there was nothing I could do, everywhere hurt. On finishing in a very embarrassing time of 5.52 I was praying the compere did not call out my name, sure enough he did and I bowed my head. This was a very bad day at the office for me, but a lovely walk!!

I am due to run Tallinn marathon next week, not sure I can face another day of walking miles when I know I should be running. Need a miracle."

Wales Half

Road Results Index  Full Results

Rupert reports: "The Wales Half Marathon is one of the events of the Wales Long Course Weekend which takes place in and around Tenby, in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. It is based around the three Ironman/triathlon disciplines, but spread over the three days of the weekend.

The weekend starts on Friday afternoon with junior sea swimming races, followed by an adult sea swim of 1.2 or 2.4 miles. On Saturday, there are three cycle sportives, of 42, 70 or 112 miles, and on Sunday, a Marathon and a Half Marathon. Participants can enter all of the three longest events, to compete for the Long Course Weekend title, or choose any one or more of the events individually. Jean and I were also in Tenby to support my daughter and 2 friends, who were each doing a different combination of two events over the weekend.

I originally planned to do the Marathon, but having taken account of the course, and my current level of fitness, I opted for the Half. I think it was a sensible decision. The course, on closed roads, runs from Tenby to Pembroke, where the Half starts, and both races then run back together to finish in the centre of Tenby. The whole course is known for its hills, with more in the return route, which is rarely flat. The Half features at least 4 particularly long hard climbs, followed in most cases by equally steep and tricky descents. It started at 12 midday, when the temperatures were around 28C. In places there was an occasional breeze off the sea, but there were a number of casualties suffering from the heat and exhaustion. The race briefing was inside Pembroke Castle, following which all 800 runners were led out to the start, parading about 500 yards along the High Street behind a Samba band, as a number of the marathon runners passed by on the other side of the Street.

The views of the hills and coastline along the course were superb, so I decided not to be too proud to walk up most of the hills, and to not worry about a time, but just try to enjoy the run.

Overall, the event is well worth experiencing. There is a great atmosphere in the town over the weekend, and in cooler conditions I would be prepared to try the course again - for the Half or maybe the Marathon."

Unofficial times 03/07/13 marked *. Others are official times 06/07/13. Official times 06/07/13 on the link above but I have put in a query as about 12 of the times look wildly out. I think something may have gone awry in the syncing of the time and number recording so some people have the time of the person that finished in front or behind them.

It does appear though that our A team was 1st M40, beating the course record we set last year.

Maggie reports: "The swim distance was reduced from initially 400m to 250m and then on the day before the race they reduced it to 200m for technical reasons. I have to say I was relieved on the day as although I had trained for the longer distance, my nerves got the better of me and my swimming was very poor, all the breathing technique went out the window, David just watched on in horror.

The bike ride was very hilly and it was chucking down with rain, but I was pleased with my time and have decided to get myself a proper racing bike as my current bike is a mountain bike and too heavy.

The run was good although my legs felt weird and a bit wobbly after getting off the bike, but again I was pleased with my time.

I'm definitely going to do more triathlons, but only in swimming pools (for the time being!)."

Bewl Water Half

Road Results Index  Full Results

Rupert reports: "I ran the Half, while Ercole, Andy, Bill and Paul ran the Full Marathon, the day being once again superbly organised by Hermes Running, (our own Mel and Dave Ross). Tom Wilkie and Jean helped out with marshalling, etc.

The first thing to be said is that the conditions under foot were totally different from last year. About 9 miles of the course is off-road (18 miles for the Marathon), and last year, away from the roads, the going varied from, at best, very soft to, at the worst, deep liquid mud that you could lose a shoe in, if you were not careful. This time, except in isolated places at the bottom of the dips, the mud was baked hard and rutted.

The second improvement was in the signing of the course, which was much clearer, and removed the risk of taking a wrong turning. There was a change also at the start, with the Full Marathon starting an hour ahead of the Half, instead of the Half starting first, which seems a much more logical arrangement. The water points were well-stocked with tasty flapjacks etc, and crisps and sandwiches were also provided at the finish.

The weather was cold and dry at the start, with a strong wind blowing off the reservoir, but as the morning went on it began to drizzle, and then rain a little more strongly.

Ercole was the first Collingwood runner home in the Marathon, but he stressed that it was the hardest race he had ever done. He aggravated his ankle injury and was limping badly after the race. A stronger field meant that Andy was unable to repeat his victory of last year, and given the tough course, Paul did very well to achieve a PB, finishing comfortably within 5 hours. I was happy with my run in the Half, and pleased to improve on last year’s time by over 12 minutes, but this was largely due to the easier conditions."

London Marathon

Road Results Index

Well done to Karen beating her time from Brighton last week by 4:49, and to Rosemary on her debut.

Kate reports: "I felt a great sense of achievement just having completed my 10th consecutive London Marathon, this year was tough, especially having been in hospital last week with a severe bout of Pyelonephritis, was only released on Tuesday this week, and then followed with a cold and bi-lateral ear infection. Great to have done this once again for United Response, charity for Adults with Learning Disabilities."

Rosemary reports: "I've been reflecting on my 1st ever marathon ...
The Prep - the largest part of my marathon was the prep beforehand from the long runs, speed/hill work, physio/massage, sleep etc. So, the day before I pinned the number to my vest, tied chip to trainers, put pain meds in jogging bottoms and laid everything out including my tutu and flapper headgear & set 2 alarms! The furthest distance I'd run beforehand was Finchley 20 on 17th March and I wasn't unduly worried about the additional 6.2m.

The Arrival - got up with enough time to eat and get ready and arrived in good time. It was like a party atmosphere on the trains with peeps sporting the very visible red VLM bags and all chatting to one another. At the venue itself the queues for the loos weren't too long and soon baggage was stowed in trailer trucks. I was in Pen 9 (the last one!) where I saw Kate Knight so at least I wasn't lonely when the gun started. It took us about 20 mins to cross the start.

The Race - it was lovely to give Joanne Sinton-Hewitt & Roofus Banks a hug just before crossing the start line, an unexpected and very pleasant surprise! The race itself was like being in a carnival - I had such fun and when the going got tough I was blessed to have friends and family around the course. The hardest part was at Halfway when I hit a mental wall. There was someone on a speaker saying well done you're halfway and to the peeps on the other side - well done 22 miles! I felt despondent that I was off my sub 6 hr goal pace and knowing that I had 9 miles to go before I'd get to the place where the masses were on the other side and this was my lowest point in the race. I quickly regrouped, forgot about time goals and simply enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a huge boost listening to ghetto blasters, choirs and a whole cacophony of noise along the way. Outside one church the priest sprinkled holy water on hot runners! Whilst it was warm I did try the showers along the route and yelped - freezing! The fancy dress costumes brought smiles to all peeps young and old and if running near a rhino, tiger or donkey the excitement was amazing from all ages. Towards the end I did pick up some pace towards the end of Mile 23 when I had one parkrun to go.

The Next Days - whilst I couldn't bounce up and down the stairs I didn't feel as rough as I did when I'd run 18m and could barely get out of my car. Very fortunate that the dreaded DOMS didn't set in and apart from a mid-week recovery run rested until parkrun Saturday and Hogsmill 5.

All in all a brilliant day and I'd really love to run London again!"

Rupert reports: "Prisca, Elaine and I left Wallington at 7.00am today in a snow shower to travel to Cranleigh for the Cranleigh 21. Bill was there also, and Rosemary ran the 15 mile race. The snow cleared and we had a good journey down.

The temperature in Cranleigh was above freezing, but for more than half the race there was light snow in the air, and there was a keen wind. I joined a select group of 9 who started 25 minutes early, while the others joined the mass start. The starter had lost the list of the early starters, so we all had hang around in the freezing wind, and then write our names and numbers down for him again before we could start and try to warm up.

I started slowly at the back of my group, but gradually passed all but one of them until after 6 miles I could kid myself that I was in second place. At 7 miles the lead runners started to overtake me. Bill passed me after 8 miles, and Elaine and then Prisca passed me in fairly close succession after 16 miles. The fields around the course were all waterlogged or flooded, and at one place the footpath was under water, necessitating a slight deviation. In a couple of other places, there was water all across the road, and many other places where the puddles extended at least half way across.

I was pleased with my time, which was 2½ minutes inside last year's time. However, the finish of the race has been re-sited this year, with the result that the course is about 300 yards shorter than it was, but I reckon that I was nevertheless just marginally quicker than last year.

I met Prisca and Elaine back in the race HQ, where we reckoned that a cup of tea and a cake for £1.00 in aid of Arthritis Research represented very good value. I had a flapjack that was almost as good as one of Cat's home made flapjacks."

Rosemary reports: "I chose this race because it fitted with my marathon training schedule having done a solo 18 miles a week before so my 1st ever 20 miles! I knew from the pre-race blurb that there was a 4 hr cut-off which I wouldn't be able to achieve & that marshals would stand down, but signed up 'cos it was a 4-lap course so memorised the route. I was determined to finish the race to get my Jantastic 20 miles whether or not I got a medal/time, and was pleasantly surprised to get both! I also finished the 20 miles faster than the 18 miles solo training run that I'd done the week before.

What made the race special is that the organisers, marshals & army cadets were excellent - one marshal even drove up to me on the route to give me a bottle of Lucozade 'cos he knew the last water station had closed and another marshal gave me a lift to my car after the race so I wouldn't catch a cold walking to it! The organisers really cared about the runners, and I defo didn't feel like I was a nuisance finishing after the cut-off time. The race was organised by the Hillingdon AC and there was almost a festive atmosphere with the marshals afterwards in their bar. I recommend this race to my fellow runners & will be back next year to get a pb whether I'm doing a marathon or not."

Alison reports: "Richard and Rachel Tanner, my Richard and Dave Condon ran the Eastbourne Half today - I went along and just supported as my ITB's on the mend and I wasn't going to risk making it worse!

Today was very cold and very windy. The hill at mile four was apparently rather challenging.

Everyone did really well - I had the easy option cheering them on when I spotted them having enjoyed a rather lovely bacon sandwich and hot chocolate at a cafe on the front!".

Dorney Race Your Pace Half

Road Results Index  Full Results

Well done to Rosemary on a PB by 8:17.

Rosemary reports: "I entered the Race Your Pace race because Runners World had pace runners ranging from 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 mins per mile and because I'd done triathlons at Dornley Lake so I knew it would be pancake flat. By race day I knew that I was just outside the 12 mins/mile so I set my Garmin pacer to a sustainable 12:35 mins/mile and set off. It's the first time I've used the Virtual Pacer and initially it felt strange going slower than I would normally have done. There were 4 laps and I was a few seconds ahead of the pacer for the first 3 laps when I fell behind slightly. I managed to push hard and caught up & was delighted to knock an extra 8:17 mins off my time. With a 5 min pb in November last year (time: 02:55:29) that's a total of 13 mins in 4 months am so excited :)

The race was well organised by Human Race and the facilities were rather marred by the shambles of the car park - previously when I've been at Dornley we've parked on the grass but it's been churned up pretty bad by the Olympic grandstands so we had to park in a farm 2 miles away! The organisers sensibly delayed the start of the race by 15 mins. The only blip was the tiny medal (3 * 2 cm) slightly bigger than Hillcrest 10k!"

Marrakech Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Rupert reports: "This felt like the hardest marathon I have done, in spite of a very flat course. At the start, it was decidedly chilly, and there was a thick mist for the first couple of hours, blanketing any views of the Atlas mountains, or indeed anything else. Then the temperature rose rapidly, to about 25C by the finish

It was very hot for the last couple of hours with almost no shade. The route was well marked with arrows and kilometre marks painted on the roads and numerous police/army/national security personnel at frequent intervals and at every junction, no matter how minor. There were regular water and sponge points at about every 5km, and they did not run out as has apparently been the case in previous years. The traffic control was generally good, with the roads mostly closed, although not everywhere, and by the time I was finishing some of the roads were already reopened and full of heavy traffic. At one roundabout towards the end, the traffic police had apparently given up and I had to take my life in my hands and just step into the road with my hands in the air to help a couple of lady runners across.

At the finish I found adequate water, oranges and a nice chunky medal available, although I heard that the organisation was overwhelmed earlier, when the bulk of the full and half marathon competitors were finishing, and almost fighting to get hold of a medal. And at least at one time there was no water immediately available.

I was told that, with its fast flat course, this Marathon is targeted at elite runners who want to secure good qualifying times for other events, and that it is not interested in catering for slower runners. It is obviously an interesting place to visit, offering great warm sunshine in the middle of the British winter, but I would not recommend anyone at over 4:30 pace to do it more than once. Having said that, maybe Jean and I will come back here some time, and just do the half marathon."
