Liverbird Double - Marathon 1

Road Results Index

Dave reports: "I did try to warn Mel before that it wasn't the most inspiring course but despite the repetition there is something quite quaint and humble about it. The lady, girl really, who organised it is very friendly and amusing. I think she has set up a good little event.

Personally I found the conditions ideal. It was cold and drizzly and a cool breeze off the river. I said to myself if there was ever a chance to break 4 hours then this was it. I knew each lap was going to be around 30 mins so if I could beat that by a minute or so then I'd have a chance. My dad, who was marshalling, told me with one lap to go that I had 40 mins to break 4 hours and despite my hamstrings cramping up every 10 steps, I knew I was going to do it. The other runners, Mel included, were very encouraging and I came home in 3.51. A late Xmas pressie ! Overall definitely one I'd do again despite the mental torture of 8 laps."

Well done to Dave on a PB by around 23 or 24 mins.

Christmas Enigma Marathon

Road Results Index

Mel reports: "Today I travelled to Milton Keynes to run the Christmas Engima marathon. This is actually a double but could only get today off work so was able to enter for day one only. The course was 17.5 times round Furzton Lake. The first couple of laps were ok, settling into a comfortable pace, well as comfortable as I could due to stiff legs from Portsmouth and a recurring groin strain. The weather was very mild and I had to stop after the 2nd lap to take off my jacket and repin my number onto to my shirt.

The lake was quite pretty the first few times, then it started to get a bit tedious lap 9,10 and 11 felt particularly hard. I plugged in my ipod for some motivation and to my dismay it lasted only 3 songs (I was sure I had charged it). My legs loosened off by the 12th lap but then the groin pain kicked in, I plodded away round and round and round the lake, The winner had lapped me 4 times which was a bit disheartening yet he only finished in 3.19 so not a particularly fast course due to all the twisting path, the first lady finished in about 3.35. The last few laps seemed to pass quite quickly as then I knew I had done it, the pain continued until I finished. I finished in 4 hours 8 mins. I received a lovely snowflaked shaped medal with santa on it. It was a well organised event by Enigma running but boy am I glad that I am not doing it again tomorrow."

Portsmouth Coastal Waterside Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Dave reports: "Really enjoyed this marathon, one of my favourites of the year. When we first turned up I thought from the outfits people were wearing,we were preparing for the Siberian marathon. It was around 3C but there were a lot of overdressed runners. I was the only runner in a vest which got a few funny looks, but when the sun was shining it was like running in the summer.

Brilliant coastal views, a good range of trails and paths and even a bit of beach shingle. The water stops were all packed and I tried a few of the gels which seemed to really help. Robbie wants to add that he didnt get lost! Good Collingwood turn out, Steve, Robbie, Bill, myself and Mel. A nice medal and a wearable t-shirt as well. Overall, one of my favourites and definitely would do again."

Snowdonia Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Mel reports: "On Sat I ran the 29th Snowdonia Marathon. I had heard a lot about this one but until now just never got round to entering it. It is known as the UK's toughest road marathon. I arrived in North Wales at 12.40pm the night before the race. I awoke the next morning to howling winds and heavy heavy rain, not ideal conditions. There was a 10 min walk to the start and I was so cold and wet. The race started and almost straight away we were climbing Llanberis pass to the top of the hill, this steady incline went on for 5 miles against the rain and wind. The rain was so heavy that it hurt to look up and when I did I couldn't see anything anyway. At the top of the hilll my buff blew off, so I ran back to get it.

After reaching the top of the first hill, there was a gentle downhill section which led on to a trail section (this was put in to avoid any mishaps on the road because it is so narrow and winding). This short section was very slippery and not easy to run on. At about 7 miles the course flattened out and followed the road alongside the lake, which I couldn't see due to the heavy rain. The halfway point was a long climb again into one of the villages. The route continued to undulate until hitting 21.5 miles.

Oh my goodness, here there was a very steep hill, I plodded up and round the corner to be faced with an even longer, steeper hill. I ran/walked up this one, which went on and on and on until 24 miles. At this point there was another trail section. It was very rutted, slippery and muddy and steep downhill. The trail turned into a tarmac road, which was still downhill, this was a nice finish, I picked up a bit of speed only to look down and see my lace had come undone. This has never ever happened to me before. I didn't want to stop so I ran to the finish with it undone. My finish time was 4 hours 12 mins 21. I did find this a very tough course in extremely difficult conditions. No medal but a lovely coaster made of Welsh slate and a T-shirt. One bad point was that there were no showers at the end, everyone was cold and soaking wet, the rain did not let up the entire race.

The next day it was brilliant sunshine so I drove back along most of the course and I was then able to see the beautiful scenery that was impossible to see during the race."

Bucharest Marathon

Road Results Index

Mel reports: "I ran Bucharest marathon yesterday, sorry for the late result. I had no phone signal there at all and got back at 3.30am this morning. The Bucharest marathon is not one I would recommend or do again. It was advertised as a 2 lap course, half way round the first lap I realised due to the KM markers that it was going to be 4 laps. The laps were very tedious, not very scenic at all. We were starting in one of the squares, heading down along by the river, crossed a bridge, back again then down another road to turn round and come back again, into the square then you were diverted down another road, to turn and come back again. This had to be done 4 times, I was finding the laps hard after the second.

It was nice that you could see the lead runners and I even managed to be lapped by them, they make it look so effortless. The weather was bad, heavy rain and cold, the roads were very very wet. I plugged in my ipod for some inspiration, only to discover it had stuck and I had the same 6 songs over and over again, almost as tedious as the laps. These songs were not the most inspiring either - chocolate by snow patrol, oasis, some weird song I didn't recognise, lady ga ga, but a slow one, walk on by U2 and mamma mia (which was the best one). I didn't even have anyone to talk to as my Romanian is none existent and their English wasn't too good. I managed to finish in 3.47ish just waiting on the chip times. The medal we got was really nice though and a great green wicking t-shirt, another country done but never again for this one."

Congrats to Mel. She was 3rd L35.

Running For Women Windsor 8k

Road Results Index  Full Results

Karen reports: "Yesterday I took part in the running for women 8k race in Windsor. This was a scenic race around the statue at the bottom of the Long Walk. It was billed as being mostly flat with one hill at the start, however, they lied! The hills continued until well after the 4th kilometre, taking most of the competitors by surprise. Inspite of that I had a good race, the course itself was a little uninspiring, in my opinion, not helped by the heat and the long run to the finish was somewhat demoralising."

London Duathlon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Rupert reports: "On 11 September, I took part in the London Duathlon, my first attempt at a multi-discipline event. This event, held in Richmond Park, describes itself as the world’s biggest duathlon, and as being for all abilities. I don’t know about the first claim, but looking around me I could see that my section of the event had attracted participants with a wide range of fitness and competence. The event includes an elite race (37k), an ultra race (107k), a “Challenge” race (37k), some relay and junior events and finally the so-called Fun Race, which is the one I entered, which consists of a 5k run, 11k bike, and 5k run.

There were 249 starters in the Fun Race, and we were sent off at set intervals in groups of about 10. I took it easy for the first 5k run, and, according to the chip timing, I was in 204th place at the end of it. In the first transition there was a longish stretch, maybe 100 or more yards, from the bike racks to the mounting point, which I ran with my bike whereas many were walking but I was surprised to find I was 34th fastest through this change over. I then enjoyed the bike course, which included a steep hill fairly early on, but then a lot of fast downhill, where I seemed to be overtaking far more than were overtaking me. Back to transition, bike on the rack, helmet off, number switch and run to the start of the second 5k run. The course was the same, so I knew there were no major hills. I felt I could push on, and was pleased to find I could finish strongly. I was amazed however to discover that I had finished in the top half, in 117th place overall, out of 246 finishers, in an overall time of 1:30. I was however the slowest of the three in M60-64.

It appears that overall numbers were significantly down on previous years, although there were still about 1700 people taking part in the various events, including over 1300 in the Challenge Race. Maybe the price put people off - the fee for the Fun and Challenge Races was £58. There was however still a good atmosphere, with the various races overlapping and a fair number of supporters on the course and around the start and finish area. The organisation of the day also appeared to be very good and I will certainly aim to do it again next year – perhaps the Challenge Race next time."

Well done to Cat on a PB.

Karen reports: "I ran the course in 1 hour and 47 minutes, 37 seconds.

The conditions were perfect, not too cold, with a bit of a breeze, sadly a bit overcast. I ran a fairly consistent pace throughout, even up the hills! The hardest part was the hill at mile 8, which I did think would finish me off, but onwards and upwards I made it to the top. It was so good to see the 9 mile marker and finaly make it back into the airfield, knowing the end would soon be in sight. I managed a sprint up the final straight through the finish. Clutching my medal in one hand and a bar of chocolate in the other I made my way back to the marquee for a massage and a rest. The heavens opened and my heart went out to those still racing.

All in all it was a good day for me; I'm looking forward to the next one."

Thames Meander Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Bill reports: " On Sat 20th August, Richard, Allan, Robbie and myself ran the Thames Meander Marathon organised by Mel and Dave. The day started hot and bright, but soon the cloud arrived and the heavens opened for the last runners in. The race started at the school where Mel works on the private Coombe Hill estate near Kingston. Perfect HQ and teas/coffees/bacon baps were available for all pre-race.

The route was an out and back to Putney Bridge mostly following the Thames Path. After leaving the school we crossed Kingston Hill and into Richmond park to the drink station at the Dysart Arms. This was manned by Cat, Josh and Lorraine, and I must say Josh would make a great lollipop man, he had total control of that crossing, no short-cuts on his watch!

We then joined the Thames Path at Richmond and followed the flour arrows Dave had marked out that morning, as he said at the pre-race meeting, impossible to go wrong. Trish and Ruth were manning the next drink station at Kew 7 miles in, doing a great job encouraging everyone as they passed, jelly babies were gratefully received on the return at 19 miles. From there to Putney bridge mingling with the Sat morning joggers along the path and the final drink station, turn at a lamp-post on the bridge and head for home.

I was running with Richard at this point but he was certainly more comfortable than me, even stopping to take photos of various landmarks on the scenic route, good job he didn't have an easel and paints in his camel-bak, he might still be there.
Richard pushed on at 14 miles and finished strongly in 3:41:42 5th place. I dug in, and after an impromptu shower from the Dysart Arms crew, finished in 3:49:57 8th place totally knackered. Allan was next in 4:15:32 19th place and Robbie was the last Collingwood runner in 5:40:58 35th place, 41 starters.

Nicky, Allison, Aimee and Dom were also at the finish cheering us in, and helping Mel with timing, photos, medals etc. After a shower and change we were treated to a superb meal, pudding and drinks in the school canteen, and a good chin-wag with all, perfect end to a great day.

Mel, Dave and everyone who helped should be proud of themselves for putting on such a good event and hopefully it will become an annual fixture. And all profits went to Mel's nominated charities."

Dartmoor Discovery 32

Road Results Index

Mel reports: "Yesterday I ran the Dartmoor Discovery 32 mile ultra. Oh my goodness this was one of the hardest road ultras I have run. It didn't help that it was so so hot there, temps of 24/25 degrees. The course was lovely starting at Princetown the home of the famous Dartmoor prison, we ran through villages and over the moors following a circular loop back to Prinetown. I was warned that this race was hilly but I didn't really take notice, I have run hilly courses before!! I got a bit of a shock as this was very very hilly and there seemed to be no flat at all.

It was a beautiful race and I enjoyed it but did find it extremely hard, my finishing time was 6 hours 6 mins. To get an idea of the difficulty of the course the men's winning time was 3 hours 57. Was worth the hard work as I got a wicking t-shirt, medal and as much sandwiches, cake and tea as you wanted. There was also a disco in the evening but I didnt really feel like dancing."

Summer Liverbird Marathon Double

Road Results Index

Dave reports: "Fantastic new event for the summer. Although the course was more than repetitive the banter and
friendliness made every lap seem like a new one. The weather was hot and windy and I think I became the first person
ever to get a genuine tan in Liverpool.

First day I ran not really thinking about having to do it all again the next day and ended up with a pb by 7 minutes. A few beers that night didn't have the relaxing effect I hoped and I found the next day tougher although the breeze from the river was refreshing. Managed 4.46 in the end but finished 9th!! My highest ever finish in a marathon. I'm not revealing the total number in the field.

Flattest marathon course in Britain according to a few of the 100 club chaps. No ups or downs. I'm already planning
a team trip for next year so beware."

Forbanks Relay

Road Results Index  Full Results

Official results 12/05/11. The first time we've done this new course. Still 2.6 miles but a much nicer route on road, unmade road and gravelly footpath, in and around Beckenham Place Park. Nearly half mile uphill to the finish though that the marshal at the bottom of the hill tells you is only 400m.

Halstead Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Andy reports: "Four Collingwood members made the trip to Essex for the 17th running of the Halstead Marathon, which as usual was excellently staged. The forecast on Saturday was for rain all race; so it was blue skies, bright sunshine and twenty degrees! A day for sun cream and sun glasses; but depending on your heat tolerance, either nice or a little warm. Eleven water stations were provided as per normal, but the organisers also managed to get extra bottled water out on to the course which was welcomed by all.

Allan Rumbles was escorting a friend around for their first marathon and finished in 3:56:18 in 222nd place, having had a steady and uneventful run, achieving his objective. More impressive was Nigel Wood’s debut road marathon. He ran a completely even-paced and consistent run, to pass Allan near the end and finish in an excellent 3:51:58, nicely inside the top 200 in 185th. An excellent first marathon, not just in the time, but how well Nigel stayed the course and how well he recovered at the finish. Clearly another Collingwood marathoner in the making? The other member running was Rob Wilson, still working steadily towards his 400th marathon. Rob still has that cap, enough said, but in complete contrast he now has a great embroidered “red hat” 100 Marathon Club vest. Rob came home in 5:31:24 in 564th place.

My race was without doubt my worst ever race of any distance, not in time, but in terms of performance, discomfort and pain. Simply put, I took a risk with my injury and got it spectacularly wrong. I locked up completely at 12 miles and by 18 miles was struggling to move forwards at all at a flat out pace of 12:30 per mile! I finished in 4:10:10 in 284th; but don’t ask, simply don’t ask!!

Usual good medal and good t-shirt, this year with “17” on the back, with a goody bag packed with numerous edible and useful items."

Help For Heroes 5k

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "I ran the 2nd Help for Heroes 5km road race on Wednesday, May 4th. I finished in 3rd place of 244 runners in a time of 19:38; but that is only half the story. This is an excellent charity event organised for Help for Heroes, with all the £13.50 entry fee going to charity. Everything was provided by sponsors for the event, so I got a goody bag, t-shirt, drinks bottle, water, fruit, energy bar and a few other goodies, to go with a medal. The race is only open to staff from work and invited guests.

I won the race last year and was given race number "1" this year as a result. The route started and finished by the Albert Memorial and followed footpaths around Kensington Gardens, whereas last year we ran around Hyde Park. Nearly half the runners were in fancy dress, including 12 Elvis’s running in formation, but it was a clearly stronger field this year.

I thought that I would struggle because of my injury, but got off the line in tenth. First and second disappeared off into the distance, whilst I gradually progressed to third place by 4km and in the end was well clear of fourth. My time was 19:38, which was a very pleasant surprise.

I lost a bit of time outside Kensington Palace, where I thought the course turned right. I could not see the marshals at this point, so I turned to the runner behind to ask if he knew whether we turned right; he didn’t know. So I decided to make the turn in any case, as I was sure we went around the edge of the Palace. As I did, I saw a blue arrow sprayed on the path, so I was on the correct route. At that point two marshals turned round having been chatting and saw me. They directed me that I was on the right route, so I didn’t think too much of it at the time.

The results took eight days to come out, because of issues caused by the above. When they were published, I was e-mailed that the first two finishers had taken a shortcut and had been disqualified. Clearly they had run passed the marshals and rejoined the route further down the path, cutting off 100 metres or so.

So, I have officially won it again! Amazing. I have to go across and collect my prize next week, no idea what it is yet. I have already been offered race number "1" next year."

Brighton Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Dave reports: "This was possibly one of my favourite marathons. I had
forgotten how powerful a huge crowd could be. A friend and I painted ourselves head to toe in pink and donned tutus for a Breast cancer charity and the reaction was amazing. I had a smile on for 26 miles. Lots of water stops kept me hydrated throughout. Great sunshine made it a very social affair and afterwards I had a big crowd of friends waiting at the finish with cold beers. Perfect day."

Mel reports: "I ran Brighton yesterday as Fiona Rider, was a last minute decision as had to work to midnight on Friday so getting up at half four the next day to be able to run the Bath Beat was going to be tough, so I managed to get an entry to Brighton.
I started right at the back as the number I acquired was on the orange start, (5.30 hour pace) I waited 15 mins to cross the start line, then was stuck behind all the slow runners, it was horrendous trying to get past them, I weaved my way in and out and managed to catch up with the 4.30h pace group and then the 4 hour, I decided to stay at that pace figuring I would finish around four hours. It was a hot one and I suffer in the heat so managed to finish in 4.05.58. Plenty left in the tank for next weeks London.

Ps I know now who was waving at me in a pink tutu - sorry Dave I didnt regonise you!!!"

Nigel reports: "While the rest of Collingwood took to the streets of Croydon I headed over to Dartford for the tenth anniversary Les Witton 10. Starting from the Princes Park sports centre it was surprising how quickly we were out in the countryside in mostly closed country lanes. The course was hilly in places so not really one to set a pb on and I clocked 1.12.16 for 86th place. Very well organised by Dartford Roadrunners and good value - the entry fee included a medal, long sleeved T-shirt, Lucozade drink and bananas. Recommended!"

Spitfire 20

Road Results Index  Full Results

On Sunday 13 March three Collingwood members were out at the Top Gear test track! 1 Collingwood member ran the 10 mile Surrey Tempest 10 and 2 members ran the 20 mile Spitfire 20. The course was wet with mist and drizzly conditions!
For the Tempest 10 results were:
169 Alison Fox 1.42.21
Dave Freeborn planned to run the Spritfire 20 but opted to complete the 10 miles as he ran with his father, who was running his final competitive race.
Dave and his dad Steve finished in 202nd place in 1.55.56

Alison reports:
"Today's race was perfect. It was at Dunsfold Aerodrome - the Top Gear test track! I was running the Tempest 10 and Cat was doing the Spitfire 20. We didn't see The Stig, Jeremy, Richard or James!

I set off from home at around 7.45am as it was going to take me a good hour to get to Cranleigh and then I had to find the airfield. And with Collingwood's reputation for getting lost...better safe, than sorry! :-)

The weather was perfect, until about half an hour into the journey and then it started gettting cloudier and then started drizzling quite heavily. And that was pretty much the weather for the race. It wasn't windy, though, which was a good thing! The car park was parallel to the start, so you could park up, go to the loo and then get back in your car in the warm and wait for the race start. I got sorted and went to the start with about 10 minutes to go. After a bit of waiting around we were off, both the 10 milers and 20 milers and next thing I know I was saying hello to Dave Freeborn and his dad and then Cat ran past - I yelled a hello to her, but she didn't hear me!

We all ran 1 circuit of the airfield perimeter - 3 or so miles and then headed out into the courntryside to run some really pretty country lanes, a few sharp little hills (but nothing too horrid) and past cottages and village ponds. I ran a comfortable 8 miles with a good friend and we parted company on the final hill. I pushed on and came into the airfield overtaking a few people that had overtaken me. Put on a bit of pace to cross the finish line in 1.42.21.

I was pleased with that as I'd reckoned on finishing in about 1.45 or so.
I collected a nice medal, run log book, a nice choc bar and a metallic blanket. I waited for Puffing Bertie to come in and saw her rounding the corner to the finish and yelled her on! :-). After a few stretches I walked back to the car to get changed - I was pretty much soaked through! As I left the airfield I passed Cat on her second lap and beeped the horn to say hi and keep up the great work...and she did finishing in a great 3 hours and 12 minutes!

I really enjoyed this cracking 10 miler and I'd do it again in a flash! Great atmosphere and good fun (good value too at around £16 entry). And it was so nice to turn into the airfield and actually see the finish pretty close, for a change! :-)"

Lydd Half

Road Results Index

Nigel reports: "I went down to deepest Kent today to do the Lydd half marathon which although close to Hastings on the map is worlds away in profile being pretty much pan flat although still breezy being close to the coast. The course was good being all country lanes and almost traffic free. Having only run one previous HM and been over cautious with the pace I aimed this time for 1.35. Getting an unusually good start and avoiding congestion I was able to hold the pace and followed the schedule pretty much spot on the whole way, speeding up slightly towards the end as the finish line inflatable arch was visible for the last mile.

I'm not sure if it was a combination of stamina from the Stinger the week before or some speed from the previous day's relay that helped the most but I clocked 1.34.48 (1.34.43 chip) for 83rd place from 456 finishers which I was happy with. It's nice when your only previous run is a slow time because there can't be many times when you can slice 14 minutes off your pb!"

Bath Half

Road Results Index  Full Results

Rupert reports: "I ran the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday as did my daughter Eleanor. It is a long-established event - this year was its 30th Anniversary – and it is also very popular. Although expensive (£34) and its stated capacity is in excess of 10,000, entries close months beforehand. And for one weekend each year it takes over the city. We found hotels and B&Bs are booked up months in advance, pasta restaurants are booked out for the Saturday night a week or more ahead, and by 5.00pm on the Saturday, the banana shelves in Waitrose had been stripped bare.

But after 30 years the organisers still seem to be struggling to get the organisational details right. We had secured a room in the George Street Travel Lodge. For those who know Bath, this should have meant a straightforward stroll of well under half a mile across Pulteney Bridge to the start in Great Pulteney Street. But this year they had a new set of pedestrian routes to the various start pens, and on approaching the Bridge, we were instructed by a jobsworth marshal that we must go via the Runners Village, on the other side of Bath Rugby ground. There was a queue to get into the Village, and major congestion at the exit and in the narrow passageways around the Rugby Ground which formed part of the new approach route. So it took us another half hour to reach the start pens. The loo queues in the Runners Village had been massive, and although the loos nearer the start, which we had intended to use, had shorter queues, time was now running out and we decided not to risk it.

At least this year it was dry, and the start was on time. On our previous visit in 2008 the start had been delayed for over an hour, and we and thousands of others tried to huddle out of pouring rain in the Runners Village and around the town.

Bath is known for its hills, but the 2-lap course is basically flat, with only a few short sharp rises, and long flat or downhill stretches. There are large enthusiastic crowds in the city centre and at some other points, plus there were live bands, groups of drummers, and music playing from any number of loudspeakers in pubs, windows and gardens. It is the atmosphere which, despite the various shortcomings and high entry fee, makes this an enjoyable occasion.

After a couple of miles I knew I had started faster than I intended, but I managed to maintain a good steady pace throughout, and was pleased to achieve a time of 2:08:22. This was inside my optimistic target of 2:10, and an improvement of over 13 minutes on my time in 2008. Eleanor was way ahead of me, finishing in 1:38:13 (4 minutes slower than 2008). The finish is in the same place as the start, and there was again congestion in the alleyways and successive queues for water and Lucozade, foil blankets, chip removal, medals, and finally a very well stocked goody bag, including a T-shirt, cereal bar, Mars Bar, more sweets, dried fruit, and a tin of sticky plasters.

I met up with Eleanor and we made our way back to the hotel, where a big disappointment was to find that the hot water was almost gone and the showers were bracing to say the least. But on balance, in spite of it all, it makes a good weekend away, and I might well be persuaded to do it again."

Wiltshire 10

Road Results Index  Full Results

Nigel reports: "I raced the Wiltshire 10 mile county championships this morning - the field was nearly all local club runners and a good standard. The course was a flattish single circuit based around Melksham and would have been quite scenic but for the driving rain. After last week's 10k pb time I decided to use the club gold standard of 1.10 as my target. At 5 miles I was 30 secs up, by 7 miles I was 5 secs down but dug in for the last two miles to finish in 69.52 and 52nd place overall. I'd say it was probably my best race yet and a new pb by over 3 minutes which made the long journey worthwhile!"

Kenley Airfield 10k

Road Results Index  Full Results

I ran the Kenley 10k this morning - 3 laps of the airfield so nice and flat but a chilly wind. 250 starters so not a huge field but a good mix of club and fun runners running to support Help for Heroes. The results have only just come up on the Sutton Sports website & I was 26th in 42.55 which is a new pb. As far as I know the only other Collingwood runner was Kate Knight who was 80th in the womens race in 87.14.

Gloucester Marathon

Road Results Index  Full Results

Steve reports: "On 23rd January I planned to meet fellow Collingwood members Dave Freeborn and Mel Ross in Gloucester for the Marathon/50k. Unfortunately I was not able to meet them until after the race.

I had entered the postcode into the Tom Tom the night before and was informed that it was 95 miles and a 1 hour 50 minute journey. When I got into the car I realised that the Tom Tom thought I was starting from Bagshot where I had raced the week before. The journey increased to 2 hours 45 minutes and the mileage increased to 145 miles! My estimated time of arrival was after the race was due to start but I still decided to travel anyway.

Lack of traffic meant I caught up a bit of time but I saw Mel walking to the 50k start as I was pulling into the road where the start was. I then parked and was running to the start when I saw the marathon runners also walking to the start. After a quick registration and change of clothes into my running gear, I ran to the start being cheered by the spectators and managed to join the back just as the gun went off. This was not really the ideal preparation and my legs took several miles to warm up. I eventually finished in 3 hours 47 minutes which was not too bad in the circumstances. Dave Freeborn had a fine run and knocked 5 minutes of his pb, finishing in 4 hours 15 minutes. Mel finished the 50k race in 4 hours 58 minutes."

Dave reports: "After a hedonistic Christmas I wasn't sure what kind of form I would produce in my first big race since the disaster of Lisbon. During the lead-up I decided to try to focus for a change and it worked. The conditions were ideal for me; nice and cold, no breeze and quiet country lanes. I wasn't looking forward to the 3 laps but due to their winding nature, I couldn't really work out where I was anyway so it didn't matter.

I kept at 9:30-10 min mile pace and sped up at 13 miles. Mile 21, I clocked at 8:57. A bit of cramp kicked in during mile 24 but apart from that, it was the best I've ever felt in a marathon. A pb by 5 minutes and amazingly 43 minutes quicker than a marathon in December."

100 Marathon Club Handicap Marathon

Road Results Index

Steve reports: "On 9th January 2011, I took the short trip to Bromley in Kent for the 100 Marathon Club Handicap Marathon. This race was organised by the 100 Marathon Club and all the runners were members of the elite club.

Runners went off with the slower runners sent off first and then it was a staggered start with everybody due to finish about 2.30 pm. It was my birthday the day before and I did not get in till the early hours so I was not sure how my race would go.

The race was fairly tough and involved 5 large laps around Bromley. About 2 miles per lap were on paths so this was slightly harder than a normal road marathon. Despite the lack of sleep, I still managed to finish my 130th Marathon in 3 hours 31 minutes which was virtually the same time as last year."

Gloucester 10

Nigel reports: "I headed west to do the Gloucester AC 10 mile road race on Sunday. A beautiful day with glorious sunshine but distinctly chilly - of which more in a moment.

The course was two laps of an undulating circuit on narrow country lanes with the start and finish in the less than scenic setting of a Park and Ride car park on the edge of an industrial estate. Just over 200 runners took part, mainly representing local clubs.

It was about 3 miles in that it became tricky when the entire road was found to be a sheet of black ice. Runners started doing amateur tight rope walker impressions just to stay upright but fortunately by the second lap the sun had come up so there were at least parts of the road that had dried out.

I was hoping for an improvement on the previous week's Tadworth time and managed it with a time of 1.13.06, shaving 4 minutes off. With slightly dead legs from the previous day's parkrun I was a bit disappointed with the time but at least know there should be more to come. An embroidered white beany at the finish made a nice change from the usual bog standard medal and will go nicely with the Tadworth towel. At this rate I'll be fully kitted out by April!"
