Hastings Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Andy reports: "A special 100th anniversary marathon was run today in Hastings, going through Battle and Bexhill, to commemorate the only previous Hastings Marathon held in December 1908.

The race followed a good route, undulating, yet actually a good course for a fast run. Only one degree at the start, rising to three at the end, lots of early mist and some sea breezes made it a nice challenge. There was a town centre start and finish, with good crowds and lots of support around the course.

Don’t tell the kids, but Santa rides a Harley Davidson, not a reindeer sleigh! Well actually about fifty Harleys went past, all ridden by Father Christmas.

Steve cruised past me after 2 1/2 miles, never to be seen again. I decided to run a steady pace and see how far I could carry it, which was my plan for Luton last week! It worked today, I ran even paced miles, until pushing on a bit from 23 miles to get under 3.20.

My Garmin time was 3.19.43, which I was pleased with. Instead of a medal, you were given a really nice horse brass set upon a martingale, relating to the Edwardian Era of 1908.

A really good event, which hopefully we do not have to wait until 2108 to do again.”

For a second view of the race, Steve reports: "On 14/12/08 Collingwood Marathon Club were represented by Mel Johnstone, Andy Stalley, Allan Rumbles and Steve Cooney at the Hastings 100th Anniversary Marathon in Sussex. The last time it was held was in 1908 when just 51 runners started. 100 years later there were close to 2000 entrants and 1175 finishers.

The race started in Hastings and then ran through St Leonards, Battle, Catsfield, Cooden, Bexhill then along the seafront back to Hastings. Several famous landmarks were passed including Battle Abbey, Battle Museum, The Squirrel Public House on the A271 just outside Battle and the Wreck of The Amsterdam.

There was plenty of encouragement from supporters including about 20 Santas on Harley Davidson Motorcycles!

The weather was cold and the course was fairly hilly.

Steve was first back and finished his 31st and final marathon of the year in 70th place in a personal best of 3 hour 13 minutes 16 seconds definitely saving the best for last. Andy was not that far behind and cruised home in 110th place in a time of 3 hour 19 minutes 24 seconds. Mel finished in 4 hours 44 seconds which was good enough for 544th place, closely followed by Allan in 4 hour 10 minutes 33 seconds (650th place). 1175 finished.

An unusual unique Fine English Horse Brass was given to each finisher. Unfortunately none of the 4 own a horse so they are unable to make full use of it!"

Well done to Steve on his pb.

Luton Marathon

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "All was well until just before the start scheduled for 10am, when it was announced that a car had crashed on the route and we would start 15 minutes late, allowing for it to be cleared. Then it was 30 minutes, once the removal truck arrived, then 45 minutes. Then a group of six officials engaged in a long and meaningful huddle behind the registration desk. I could see the obvious conclusion before it arrived. They announced that as we would not start until 11.30am at the earliest and as the removal truck could not get traction on the ice to remove the overturned car and due to the five hour cut off and people finishing in the dark; the race was abandoned!

As you can imagine, this went down well! Two 'Hundred Marathon Club' members had planned Luton as their 100th marathon, many runners had travelled a good distance in freezing conditions, so the lack of a plan B by the organisers was the subject of much debate. Still, I got another t-shirt!"

Cornish Marathon

Road Results Index

Mel reports: "Yesterday one lonely Collingwood memeber Mel Johnstone took part in the 25th Cornish Marathon starting in Pensilva. When I arrived at the start I expected only to know a couple of Sutton runners who said they were doing it, but there were lots of familiar faces from the 100 Club and others I'd met at previous marathons.

Before the start everyone was saying have you done this one before, No, I replied, oh they said its very hilly and quite a hard course. I thought to myself, I have heard that before so wasn't too concerned.

The route started with two small laps of Pensilva before heading out through other villages (now I knew what they were talking about - it was hill after hill after hill) I was feeling it after 8 miles. If it continues like this I will struggle I thought. However after reaching Bodmin moor it did even out and became fairly flat between 11 - 19 miles. We ran through the moor passing the Famous Jamacia Inn. It was very windy up here. I tried to save a bit of energy for the end as I knew we had to run the same 5 miles back to the finish, therefore the hills again. The course was very picturesque and there was good support from the locals on the way round, drinks stations, and marshalls were very encouraging. After getting up the final hill at 24 miles I looked at my watch - 3 hours 47. Just under two miles to go, could I push to make it under four, let's give it a go I thought. I ran fairly fast then reaching the home straight which was down hill. I sprinted, overtaking lots of others, but missing out on a sub-four by 2 mins. Never mind, was happy with that as it was a fairly tough course but definitely one I would do again. At the finish we got a t-shirt, free tea and coffee and a Cornish Pastie. The medals are following, as apparently the supplier sent them with 10k on them so they had to be returned.

Surrey Classic Series - Oxshott 10k

Road Results Index   Full Results

Martin reports: "The first in the 3 race 10k Surrey Classic series on an undulating course around Oxshott. I'd forgotten how undulating it was. There was rain throughout the race with large puddles along the edge of the road in many places.

Andy stretched out a 30 metre gap in the first couple of kilometres but I managed to catch and pass him at about 5k and opened a 40 to 50 metre gap, but he went back in front of me inside the final 2k with a good finishing surge.

Paul was happy as he ran inside 50 mins for the first time in a year or so without the restriction of a dodgy hamstring. Well done to Kate on a pb.

We missed out on the cake that Mel had promised us in her new house next door to the race HQ, but settled for bacon rolls at the clubhouse instead."

New Forest Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Andy reports: “Steve Cooney, Andy Stalley, Allan Rumbles and Melanie Johnstone started the new course ‘New Forest Marathon’ today, under bright sun and clear blue skies. Gently undulating until past 16 miles when there were a few hills, but overall a nice course, excellently marshalled with good drinks stations. Depending on who you talk to, it was easier or harder than last year. The course goes through the New Forest on roads and forest tracks, out onto the moors and passes through some nice villages. There were supporters all around the course enjoying the warm temperatures and late summer sun.

Steve started brightly to lead Andy by about a third of a mile by the 10 mile marker. However the gap was down to 300 yards by 20 miles and only 30 yards with 2 miles to go. Steve took a quick glance over his shoulder, noticed the competition and kicked for home, running straight through the last drinks station. The battle continued with both really picking up the pace over the last two miles, but Steve proved too strong to finish with a gap of 13 seconds on the road. Chip times 3:25:24 (57th) versus 3:25:43 (60th).

Allan ran a steady race without incident to be next home in 167th place with a chip time of 3:46:40. Sadly Mel suffered a recurrence of her knee injury and had a painful second half of the race to finish in 323rd place and 4:17:25. Allegedly the injury may have been caused by an accident the previous day involving a washing machine and a fireman’s uniform!

There were 491 finishers. Excellent race with use of a swimming pool afterwards. A very detailed and professional colour A4 race booklet was supplied with a nice medal as well.

Lisa Shennan completed the half with a chip time of 2:19:00 in 1448th place, but we did not see her, so we do not know how she got on."

Andy reports: "Medical advice was it would have been stupid to run. Wifely advice was it would be !"£$%^ stupid to run. So, I ran.

Finished in 3.26.43 by my Garmin, a minute quicker than last year. Turned my ankle after two miles, had a real bad turn after 20 miles, blistered both feet and had some other problems as well. Overall, a good run in the circumstances, in good weather, on a good course.

Official result: 167th of 1128 finishers in 3.26.51 gun time and 3.26.44 chip time.

We had booked a hotel, just over the suspension bridge and two minutes from the start. Unfortunately the bridge was shut as it was structurally unsafe, so we had a 15 minute walk and the race route had to be altered to find another route over the Trent.

Second race of the day was getting down the M1 to see QPR go 4th - arrived 6 minutes into the second half!"

Nike Human Race 10k

Road Results Index

Doug reports: "On the last day of August 2008 I, with a few thousand others, ran the Human Race 10k starting at Wembley Stadium, whilst the same distance was being attempted in cities all over the world. Prior to the start we were serenaded by 'Pendulum' and 'Moby' and sent on our collective way by Seb Coe and Paula Radcliffe into a rather wet and dark Wembley, but the light from the Arch helped to illuminate our path.
The race passed surprisingly quickly, as was I by Paula Radcliffe at 9k
(injury not withstanding - hers , not mine.) I finally crossed the line in 55:41. Final Placing - London...6,146th; The World...61,407th.
Overall a fantastic event which also raised money for www.livestrong.org (The Lance Armstrong Foundation), www.ninemillion.org (UN Refugee Agency), and WWF www.wwf.org"

London Centenary Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Allan reports: "On the 24th July 2008 it was the Centenary of the London Olympic Games Marathon. Up until London 1908 the marathon had been run over different distances varying from 24 to 26 miles but due to Royal pressure the distance was set at 26 miles 385 yards, this was to become known as the London Distance.

To commemorate this anniversary the 100 Marathon Club organised a one off event for those lucky enough to be invited to run it. Five Collingwood runners were invited to participate. Melanie Johnstone, Steve Cooney, Andy Stalley, Rob Wilson & Allan Rumbles all assembled at the start line just by Windsor Castle. Under a baking hot sky & the watchful eyes of the armed Police guarding the Castle we started at exactly 2.30pm. We all set off in good order to the cheers of the tourists & quite probably the Police. This was supposed to be a minimally supported event with only one drink station at 17½ miles but as it was so hot they put one on at the 6-mile mark which was gratefully received.

Everyone ran their own race with Steve & Andy heading off at the
front of the field. Mel & Allan kept overtaking each other as one got
stronger & then the other. Allan started to really overheat & stopped off at a friendly Hand Car Wash to get them to hose him down for 10mins. It was just what the doctor ordered although they did think he was a bit of a nutter. On emerging from his soaking he saw Mel in the distance & chased her down to run together for the rest of the race only to stop for an ice cream at 16 miles. Who said marathon running wasn't fun???

We carried on despite the heat running on roughly the same course as the 1908 athletes had done and finishing on the same line as 1908 just outside where they film The One Show, where there were enough drinks & snacks to sate anyone's appetite."

67 finishers.

Nacht Van West-Vlaanderen Marathon
(Night Of Flanders)

Road Results Index   Full Results

Andy reports: "I did my first overseas marathon last night, starting at 8pm in Torhout, Belgium, the 29ste Nacht Van West-Vlaanderen, The night of Flanders Marathon; on a 100 Marathon Club trip.

The course starts in the town centre, runs a 10km loop back into the town square and out the other side of town on a 32km loop, before finishing in the town square. The course is flat and fast and completely traffic free, with temporary floodlights for the country sections for when night falls. I had a good steady run finishing in 3.25.02, and that was a 3 minute negative split.

Excellent event, band at the finish playing long in to the night. The town was still buzzing at 3am, while the 100km runners were completing their laps, bars open and hundreds still on the streets. The whole town gets involved and the sports centre is open all night as the race HQ. The bar was still open and hundreds chatting when I moved to the basketball court, which was the dormitory. No British marathon is organised like this one or provides the same atmosphere and value for money. One definitely for the diary for 2009."

They joined a large number of 100 Marathon Club Members in celebrating Dave Ross's 100th marathon. Several of the group wore fancy dress. Mel wore her Celtic shirt. Allan and Steve decided to wear their club vests and went disguised as Collingwood Club runners.

The course was fairly flat apart from a couple of small hills and conditions were good for running.....nothing like their last marathon in Halstead when it was so hot that the tarmac melted!

They were encouraged all the way around by the crowd who helped Steve home in a time of 3 hour 19 minutes 28 seconds. This was good enough for 120th place. He passed the halfway mark in 1 hour 40 minutes and 27 seconds so the second half was faster than the first half. Allan was next home in 345th place in 3 hour 45 minutes and 13 seconds. This was his fastest time for a while and he was pleased with this time. Mel followed in a time of 4 hour 36 minutes and 1 second and was 921st. 1337 finished but there were also about 850 teams who completed in the relay marathon.

Allan unfortunately had to go home early so was only able to have a couple of drinks. Mel and Steve joined Dave and the 100 Marathon Club for a Guinness or two and were out till the early hours."

Andy reports: "Five Collingwood runners set off under clear blue skys and bright sun this morning in Halstead, Essex for the 14th Halstead Mararthon. It started hot and got hotter and hotter. By the end runners were complaining of the tarmac sticking to their shoes!

Steve was first home in 65th place and 3.35.06, with me in 82nd place and 3.40.41, having both suffered in the heat. Steve opened a gap on me of 100yds by 6 miles. I closed him down by 11 miles, only for him to disappear over the horizon by 16 miles, never to be seen again.

I had a few problems along the way, but nothing compared to Allan, who came home in 270th and 4.36.41; he was unwell (polite version) before the race and a couple of times during it. Still, he battled it out to finish.

Rob was next home in 353rd, 2 seconds outside of 5 hours. Tom completed the Collingwood finishers in 5.58.06 for 423rd.

Good course, good medal, good t-shirt, ten drinks stations, well marshalled and a new race HQ in the local leisure centre."

Bungay Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Steve reports: "On Sunday 6th April the Collingwood marathon quartet of Melanie Johnstone, Andy Stalley, Allan Rumbles and Steve Cooney accompanied by Dave Ross from Sutton Runners traveled to Bungay in Norfolk to compete in the marathon there. All 5 were planning on completing 6 marathons in 6 weeks before joining Dave for his 100th marathon in Cork on 2nd June. Andy, Allan and Steve had warmed up by doing the Banstead Time Trial the day before. Andy showed a glimpse of what was to come by breaking 20 minutes for the first time at Banstead.
They drove through a snowstorm on the way and despite Andy insisting that it was due to stop, it worsened as Bungay approached. Allan unfortunately forgot his race number and admitted that he was hoping that they would not accept his entry so he was intending to do the 2 km fun run instead. A replacement number was given to him and he reluctantly lined up with the others at the start.

They started in a snow blizzard. Hail then sleet followed. Then it was back to the snow again.

Despite the atrocious conditions Andy, who has been improving drastically since the New Year smashed his personal best by a magnificent 7 minutes in 3 hour 12 minutes. This time, in his 61st marathon, guarantees him entry into the 2009 London Marathon. Steve followed him home, completing his 40th marathon in 3 hour 36 minutes. Allan was just over a minute behind and finished his 32nd marathon in 3 hour 37 minutes. His next marathon is this Saturday in Exmoor which coincides with his 40th Birthday. Mel, completing in her 53rd marathon finished in 4 hour 3 minutes.

A shield, mug and keyring were given to each finisher. The race is value for money and all plan on returning next year."

I still managed to complete this one in record time breaking my three hours and came in at 2.58.47 which was a very pleasing result. I now have the Kingston 16 to look forward to on 30th March before London."

Gloucester Marathon

Road Results Index   Marathon Full Results   50k Full Results

Andy reports: "Four Collingwood runners set out on the 1st Gloucester Marathon, since 2000. There was also a 50km race starting at the same time. Both races did a outward leg of about 2 miles to join the main lap. 3 laps for the marathon and 4 for the 50km. The marathoners then run the same outward leg back to the finish, while the 50km'ers go straight to the finish.
Two male members, Steve and I, two female members Mel and Allan, started the marathon! Unfortunately for Allan, AKA Alana, Mel sent in his entry. Mel is used to ticking the M/F question F, so naturally she entered Alana as a woman! Easy mistake to make?
Steve set out strongly as usual, leaving first me and then Mel, on route to a probable sub 3.20 time (having forgotten to charge his Garmin, so he was able to work out his mileage). There were no mile markers, just 10km, 20km, 30km and 40km signs. Mel was also away fast and It took me 8 miles to close her down, as she was flying. Allan took a more sensible pace, given his return to training. So, the order on the road was Steve, me, Mel and Allan.
I was first to finish in 42nd (1st Collingwood runner), in 3.40.36, having been sub 8 minute miles until hitting the wall after 21 miles (Banstead Woods yesterday may not have been a clever idea!). Mel finished strongly in 61st and 3.54.18 (2nd Collingwood runner). Due to a marshalling error, she was sent off on a fourth lap, instead of the leg back to the finish. Fortunately, someone realised the error and chased after Mel to return her to the route, with an extra 1/2 mile run! Allan finished comfortably in 4.05.54 (2nd Collingwood lady!). So where was Steve, I hear you ask, as we asked, particularly as he drove! Steve finished the marathon in 105th in 4.28.30!
Steve was not as lucky as Mel. The same marshalls who failed to send Mel to the finish, actually sent Steve off on a 4th lap, which sadly no one noticed. Steve was wearing a marathon number, so it should not have happened. Without his Garmin and looking for the 40km sign, Steve ran well around the 4th of 3 laps! No real course map had been provided, so he did not know of the error. By the time he worked it out, he decided to finish the lap. Only to be sent down the leg (as he was a marathon runner) instead of straight to the finish as for the 50km. He probably clocked up 53km! The official outcome was to write to the race director and see if he could have his result transferred to the 50km, as everyone was busy!
Over 20 notes for a less than pretty course, only six aid stations, of which only 3 had High-5. No medal, but a whiskey type glass. Little water at the end and you had to surrender your race number or no glass! Nowhere near the value and course of Shakspeare or Robin Hood. Not the greatest of races, just ask Steve (who also did the BWTT yesterday)."

18/08/08: Steve has now been officially recognised as completing the 50k course where he finished 22nd, although he does now appear in both the marathon and 50k results.
