Luton Marathon

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Four Collingwood runners ignored the weather forecast of rain and wind and ran the Luton Marathon today. The first of three laps was run in rain and high winds, as per the forecast. The second lap got nasty, heavy rain and strong winds. The third lap was dry, but still windy. Flat course, but very hard in the conditions, not a PB day.

Steve flew away from the start to finish in a very fast 3.24.12, in 86th; an excellent result, clearly sub 3.20 in dry conditions. Mel, running in a newly washed bum-bag ran strongly to finish in 225th and 3.47.06; again an excellent time in the conditions. So why mention the bum-bag, I hear you ask; well, the combination of rain, lots of rain and a residue of soap powder, meant that Mel was foaming her away around the course. Unfortunately, her mobile was in the foaming bag. It now is lovely and clean, if a little soggy. No calls possible, but it looks great after a 40 degree wash and spin.

Ruth ran just outside her PB in 4.17, another strong run, that clearly would have been a lot closer to 4 hours in good conditions. Ruth attempted a world record of running with the most energy gels strapped to her belt. Guinness Book of Records entry awaits.

I ignored the sage advice of my physio to rest my calf and ran. The calf was fine, but I hit the wall at 20 miles. Sadly, the wall was 20 foot high with barbed wire on top; I did not get over it! I produced my worst ever run and my worst time since 1996, 4.10; a combination of getting very cold and little running over the last few weeks.

Nice T-shirt, good medal and a small goody bag; with hot showers (in the leisure centre, the ones outside were cold!)."

Graham reports: "Yesterday I competed in the Stebbing 10, a nice road race through Essex countryside. Despite a bracing wind which somehow seemed to be in my face most of the way around, I managed to just beat my target of 8 minute miling, to finish in 1:19:43. As this was my first race over this distance, this represents a pb!"

Andy reports: "We did two laps of the track instead of one at the start due to a marshalling error, so they cut about 350m off the finish, without telling us. After the track, it is a tough 3-lap hilly course, not one for a PB. No medal or certificate, but a baseball cap and can of red bull! 211 finished."

New Forest Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Congrats to Terry on his 50th marathon, and Andrew on his 1st.

Ruth reports: "Eight Collingwood Runners competed in the New Forest Marathon at the weekend, one in the half and seven in the full. Steve was the first Collingwood Runner home in 3.31. Alan laid his ghosts to rest from last year when he had had a really bad time and was second in 3.53 followed a wee while later by Ruth who smashed her PB coming home in 4.13. It was a 1st Marathon for Andrew and Terry’s 50th. In true style they crossed the finish line together hands held together high in a victory salute at 4.16. Mel had pulled a muscle in her leg a few days before and came in at 4.23. Although she was disappointed by this result she made a Stirling (no pun intended) effort over the last few miles to achieve this as she was in a lot of pain. Rounding up the team was Doug who swam his way to the finish line in 5.26 (he did, honestly – just ask him!).

The race was run through beautiful countryside and the weather was kind to us. Horses were frequently seen galloping along side the runners and sometimes across the paths of the runners too which was a bit scary. Terry nearly got taken out by a horse as it dashed across in front of him but being a bus driver he managed to avoid a collision with due expertise. We were all a bit mystified by Allan’s choice of spot prize. He was called to go in to the sports hall to collect it and from a selection of very manly prizes such as beer, whisky and wine and came away clutching a pair of women’s running socks!? Enough said.

Kate took part in the half marathon but the results are not yet available.

All in all a grand day out."

Congrats to Andy on his 50th marathon.
Andy reports: "I was aiming for 3.37, thought 3.35 was possible, so 3.27.45 and 183rd of 1059 was unexpected.
I started well and kept going, knocking out the miles at under 8's. I slowed a bit into the head wind in the last four, but I still felt fine.
So, 50 not out!"

Kent Coastal Marathon

Road Results Index

Andy reports: "Kent Coastal Marathon Report; otherwise known as the Thanet Casualty Report!

Six Collingwood runners bravely set out on the Kent Coastal Marathon, in what turned out to be hot, humid and breezy conditions. The route runs out from the start through Broadstairs along the coast, which is quite undulating. We returned back to the start, which was the half-way point, on mostly the same route. Then we followed the beach promenade through Margate in the opposite direction, into a sea breeze, until turning to follow mostly the same route back to the finish.

Tom and Rob were running together. Mel, Steve and Allan started strong, dropping me from the start. I managed to pass them after 4 miles, opening a gap, which Steve closed and flew passed at 11 miles. However, I closed him back down until I was on his shoulder at 19 miles only for him to see me and speed away again. Allan left Mel after about 20 miles, kicking on to the finish.

Whilst on the out and back route through Margate, Tom was leading Rob and cheerfully passed on the following information, "the old ### has fallen over and is bleeding". Rob was seen soon after with a bandaged arm, still running.

Multiple choice question - What happened to Rob?
A) Tom picked up an iron bar from the side of the course and attacked Rob.
B) Tom and Rob saw a 1p coin on the road and Rob was injured in the subsequent fight.
C) Rob paid a visit to a local bush, only to be attacked by an irate squirrel protecting his nuts.
D) Rob simply fell over in Margate.

Only Tom and Rob know the actual truth! Maybe the story will be explained on Tuesday?

The hot conditions took their toll: Steve was not 100% at the finish, I have another couple of blisters and Rob visited the first aid tent for a new dressing. Allan was fine after his victory cigar, Mel needed an ice lolly and I required a quadruple espresso.

Nice medal and T-shirt, bananas and drinks at the finish. Good drinks stations with bottled water, energy gels and jelly babies. Another good marathon.

Andy reports: "Steve and I did the Essex Walkers trail event today, near Maldon in Essex. Nice course; bit of town by the river, river bank, estuary, canals, woods, fields and National Trust Land. 90% off-road, with only a few minor hills. Steve did 4.02 and I did 4.27, which given it being very warm and sunny was fine for both of us. Pity Rob was not allowed out to play! Allan might not be happy to hear that they did accept entries on the day! Cost of five pounds, for a certificate, coffee and biscuits before the start, four checkpoints with fruit cake and other cakes, with a meal with pudding afterwards - excellent value."
