Luton Marathon

Road Results Index

Allan reports: "The day started out absolutely hammering down with rain & it looked like we wouln't even run the race (we were still in Wallington). Anyway we drove up to Luton & the weather improved dramatically so much so Steve just wore his vest to run in.
It was a bright but VERY VERY blustery day, Mel nearly wiped herself out on a bollard before the race even started, we were laughing so much we nearly earned ourselves 5 points each. The race started & we took off in good order, Steve, Mel & myself ran together for the first mile or so then Steve took off at a gallop. It developed into a battle against the hills & the wind from then on in. We won of course (nature can't put us down).
Quite an uneventful race for me don't know about the others but I did catch Steve up at the 20 mile mark. We had a little chat before I went off as I was on for a P.B. (got it as well).
On another note the showers at the end were bloody boiling & they were charging £1 for a cup of tea!!!!
Here's the finish times subject to verification.
The Collingwood Four
Allan 3hrs 26mins 24seconds - 5points
Steve 3hrs 32mins
Mel 3hrs 56mins
Rob 5hrs 2mins -10 points -267th marathon"

Chip times are shown. 2283 finishers. Steve was around 40s quicker than his last 10k at Elmbridge, and Tom was almost 2 mins quicker than at Oxshott a couple of weeks ago. Paul was also a little faster than at Oxshott and Terry after a long absence from racing and complaining of a cold still managed to chase Paul home. Doug has also been an infrequent racer of late (and infrequent trainer!) so was probably pleased to get under the hour. At least he managed to appear in the results this time.

Dublin Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Allan reports: "Brilliant running weather, excellent organisation on the day, very very friendly people who kept on giving me bags of Haribo for some strange reason, still ate them though, I think I weighed 2 pounds heavier at the finish than I did at the start. I went to achieve two things:
1. A personal best (achieved) 3hrs 36mins 10sec, even if it was by 1 second. I'll take them where I can.
2. Drink Dublin dry. After a valiant 12 hour attempt I had to admit defeat (knew I was hammered as I found a kebab wrapper in my kit bag the following morning).
Roll on next year hopefully I'll be back to tackle them both again. No points."

Anglesey Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results   Photo

Allan reports: "The race was started 5 minutes late in perfect marathon running weather by that well known welsh athlete Colin Jackson who promised to run it next year (apparently he says that every year). Steve & myself had the job of pacing Mel so she could get a sub 3:45 time & get a guaranteed entry into London. Rob & Tom were running their own race & we didn't see them again until the finish.
It started well & we kept rigidly to 8min 10 second miles for the first 5 or 6 miles. As I had the Garmin I was setting the pace but I kept noticing Mel was dropping back to 9 min plus miles. I dropped back to see if Mel was alright & she told me that she was really struggling & not having a good time of it at all. We ran on for another mile, I kept to the 8min pace but I had to wait for Steve & Mel to catch up. Mel at this point was really having a bad time of it & I was getting a bit of a selfish streak as it looked like I could bag myself a P.B.
Mel knew that she couldn't get her time & Steve said he'd stay with her so they told me to go for it. I went for it but didn't get it, missing out by 5 mins (need to work on that). Having walked with Mel for about 10-15 mins Steve left her to run his race & passed me at about the 16/17 mile point. Speedy Steve is his new name. Meanwhile, Mel had to pull out at about 16 miles.
The weather got a lot warmer in the second half of the race & we finished in glorious sunshine. all in all a good race, well organised with a tasty bit of food at the finish.
Points were as follows (new category: hurling 7 points)
Steve 0 points
Tom -10 points (lewd behaviour)
Allan 5 points
Rob 7 points
Mel 34 points"

Those running the inaugural Mablethorpe Marathon in Lincolnshire also suffered from the hot weather, especially as their start time was an hour later. There was something of an exchange of places amongst the first three at various stages as each died and came back to life again. Mel was also seeking a good-for-age time for London qualification (3:45) and although she missed this, she did run a pb and came home as 3rd senior lady. Well done Mel.
Tom and Rob crossed the line together. We're yet to hear whether they were holding hands or not.

Unfortunately the attempt to run a sub 3:15 for a London Marathon good-for-age qualification time didn't quite come off. The weather was pretty warm, especially after 19 miles, and the first half of the course was very undulating, but it was pretty galling to miss it by 4s. If only....

Kent Coastal Marathon

Road Results Index   Full Results

Allan reports: It was perfect marathon running weather at the start of the race but a little blustery. The race started promptly at 9.30am, Rob, Tom & myself decided to run a little points table according to toilet breaks: 5 points for a pee break & 10 points for a number 2. I accrued the first 5 points within 200 yards of the start (damn that Lucozade Sport). About 5 miles into the race Rob (apparently following race tradition) broke the 10 point barrier with a bit of a dirty protest. Ask him for the story, he tells it with great gusto.
The first half was run at a reasonable pace until Tom decided to go for it & started running at a 6 minute mile pace - had a bit of trouble keeping up with him especially as this was supposed to be a training run for me for next week. Anyway after that bit of exertion Tom had shot his bolt big time & by the halfway stage was fading fast. I left him to carry on at a steady run at about the 12 mile point.
By this time the wind had picked up considerably & we had a hard time of it for the next 6 1/2 miles until the turn around. Lots of runners were walking along by the seafront as it was that windy it felt like I was running in slow motion - kept running though.
All in all a good race, well marshalled & well organised with plenty of water stations. Not the place for a PB.
Forgot to mention the sun came out as well & i've got a bit of a burnt head & shoulders. Points table finished as:
Allan 5pts
Tom 5pts
Rob 10pts

Another very warm day for Elmbridge. Allan was happy with his debut 10k. Steve won a kite as a spot prize, so he'll be out on Purley Way this afternoon. Nigel was not so happy, finishing with cramp. Paul ought to be happy as the official results gave him a time in the 41s. I'm sure he'll take that without grumbling too much. And finally, Steph continues to edge the times back downwards on her comeback trail.
In the Surrey Road League, Collingwood Men were 16th and are in 19th place overall after this race, and Collingwood Ladies in 17th, 18th overall.

Fairly unpleasant conditions for this low key multi-terrain race. Early drizzle turned to heavier rain, and conditions underfoot were a bit slippery in places.
Congratulations to Dan on his first race victory. After the starting lap and a half of the rugby field he was in third, just a few metres back from the leading two. He does tend to start conservatively though, and by the turn at the far end of Riddlesdown Common he was in 2nd place, a few paces behind the leader, with 3rd place dropping back about 10m. Dan took the lead on the steep hill at the near end of the common, and the early leader started to drop back, leaving him with an unchallenged last mile to the finish.
Martin was 3rd vet.

Dan reports: "Back to my hometown to take part in this local 'running festival' which comprises 7 children's races and finishes with a 6k for the adults.
My 2 year old son Aaron made his running debut (!) in the 300m pre-school race which he ran non-stop (apart from falling over once). He really enjoyed it and was chuffed to have a race number and medal of
his own!
Unlike the well supported children's races, the 6k race is, unfortunately, declining in popularity. This year with a field of maybe 50-60 runners, feeling slightly below par and recording a slightly below par time of 20-39 I finished in 2nd place."

Dan was not at his fastest with a bit of a cold, and Martin was a bit disappointed - hoping for low 19s. Terry B was complaining of a sore quad and
Chris feeling a bit of a tight calf.
Tom had his customary burn-up in the last 50m, this time with John.
Welcome to the Collingwood racers to Ruth - her debut race.

Lovely conditions for running - not too warm, not too cold, a light drizzle every few miles. Dan had another good run with a pb by 3s over last year. David also ran a pb, beating his debut time at Cardiff last year by around 10 mins. We'd swopped places a couple of times during the race, but infuriatingly he cruised past me in almost the same place on the course (Blackfriars) that his father Bernard did 6 years ago.
For myself, I was a long way outside the 3:15 I'd hoped for. The calf muscles that have troubled me for the past couple of weeks were fine but the quads decided to get in on the act from quite early on. At halfway I didn't foresee getting past 15 miles.
Steve ran excellently on his first road marathon. He was aiming for sub 3:30 and managed that easily.
Tom has an unofficial time as he lost his chip somwhere on the course - a bit like dinner time on club nights! He also has the honour of now having completed 50 marathons. The drinks are on Tom.

Bob reports: "Another first for me and another trip to the seaside. A bit windy but the rain held off. Met Martin at the start and saw a young lady on the course with a Collingwood vest on (mine was in the wash). She seemed a bit shocked when a bloke with a mohican shouted a few words of encouragement. I actually beat Martin for a change. He finished a few mins later."

Dan reports: "With near perfect conditions and a fast course, I was hoping the dodgy ankle would hold up and offer me a crack at the pb here. Passed through 10M a few seconds inside the hour & was continuing well until personal disaster struck at 11.5M in the form of an extreme stitch / stomach cramp which forced me to stop. Managed to stop-start jog to finish in 1-21-35. Gutted; but a least the ankle's OK. Despite my experience, this is an excellent race, which I hope to do again. Didn't see any other Collingwooders - but surely Bob C was there?"

Dan reports: "Brighton was wet, cold & windy which made for a tough run. I was hoping to do sub-80mins as last year, but running into a strong wind miles 5-10, then struggling to stay upright on the muddy footpath miles 10-12 made sure I didn't get a sniff at that. Felt I had a fairly good run though & my position was similar to 2005. Seeing the familiar ponytail of Martin Giles getting ever closer (rather than ever further away) & managing to pass him at mile 8 was a bonus....but I guess he was having an off day!"
Bob's report is somewhat briefer: "Poxy day, poxy weather, poxy injury."
