Round The Lakes 10k

Road Results Index

Paul reports: "Not my type of race but it was the only one on. It's the first 10k I've done since 2002. It was nice and sunny but cold. The day before I had been giving my son skateboarding lessons, ie me on skateboard, my mad terrier attached to my left leg and some contact with tarmac, not that I'm making excuses for my time, but the hospital did say I should have bed rest with plenty of cider and bed baths (I wish).
It was 4 laps, which I hate, but it was around a very scenic lake so not too bad. Hope you all had a good Christmas."

Road Results Index

Chris Brooke reports: "Dan was first home in just over 36 mins with Keith a half a minute behind. This fine run by Keith, his fastest in the 3 race series, ensured he won 3rd prize in the M40 category for the series. Paul B was next home in 47 mins and slightly disappointed in the time. He blamed the weather which was a bit cold and windy. On the other hand I was over the moon with my time of 49:13, which was 3 1/2 minutes quicker than my time in the second race of the series.
Next came Tom in just over 51 mins with John a few seconds behind. John said he could have beaten Tom but he didn't want to go for the sprint finish, a la Tom. Finally Gareth finished in around 53 minutes and much to his and everyone else's surprise he won the 2nd prize in the M60 category. He's going to be insufferable from now on, if his performance at the prize giving was anything to go by. He milked the applause to the nth
degree and then asked anyone whose eye he could catch if they had won a prize before."
Places in brackets are overall finishing positions.

Paul reports: "Second year for me at this one - good conditions no wind and not too cold, but it's a road race and I'm starting to just get bored with road running. Didn't have any problems just get fed up plodding around country lanes when there's plenty of good field and woods etc. to run in. I forgot to stop my watch as well - definitely slower than last year - I reckon about 1-06-30. Will check the results online and let you know. Travelled up with Terry who got us lost because he was talking too much. Anyway, when we got there an ugly bloke was waving at us, on closer inspection it turned out to be Colin. The conditions were overcast with light drizzle at times but no wind at all (except what was coming out of Robbie who was doing the marathon). I had a slight problem at 4 miles with what I thought was cramp in my thigh. Overall we were all pleased with our times.

Tom reports: "We didn't get lost like some group of runners (from Collingwood AC I think), we knew where we were going. Our chief navigator (Doug of all people) knew his stuff. All credit to Alix being her first Marathon and only 17 years old."
Paul reports from the second Collingwood faction: "Mel , Maeve, Terry , and I ran this together. Weather was fine, dry and sometimes warm. We had a couple of deviations from the route but it added to the day. After our first detour it meant that we had to pass Rob, Doug, Robbie and Alix who had got ahead of us (much to their delight), but after the first checkpoint we met them coming the wrong way and asking us where to go. (So, evens Wilkie). Mel and Maeve did an excellent job reading the route description with myself on the compass and Terry on the fags. We had a good day and I think we enjoyed it. The scenery was fantastic at this time of year and the company as well."

The Beast

Road Results Index

Well, its a good job I know my way around in Dorset now! I travelled 55 Miles for this run and came back the right way 31 Miles. Had read a lot about how tough this run is, it's 13/14 Miles cross country and it was blisteringly hot. It has two sets of steps along the coast that I had trouble walking up, I kid you not. The problem I had was the run is very narrow with hardly any places to pass in the first 5 Miles or so, and there were loads of sties and gates, it was like rush hour in London with queues at all the gates, etc. You're forced to run at the pace of the runners in front of you. It opens up for the last 4 miles but by that time I just wanted to finish. Verdict - tough yes, but too much congestion for me. I didn't really enjoy it, it became a plod. Time 1-54-54, going kayaking now with a pack of Bud.

The beach was full of people cheering us on.

Dan reports: "A picturesque race through the Sussex countryside on a pleasant Sunday morning with muddy puddles, cows, stiles, gates, dogs, ramblers and wind (not mine) to contend with.
In a field of 200 or so I was in a group of 4 or 5 for the first mile, and then something strange happened; for the first time I can remember I found myself at the front, quite comfortably pulling away from the others. By 4 miles in I couldn't even hear them and it all seemed a bit like a usual lonesome training run.
And there I stayed........... until the half way point when the others suddenly re-appeared at the same time my energy disappeared. They started passing me and I couldn't respond, but continued to plod on to finish in 1 - 22 - 54, about a minute behind the winner."

This meant they all had to do the extra lap at the finish, which produced some confusion for the runners and the marshals. Andy didn't have to worry too much about the extra lap at the end though, as by that time he had a 300 to 400m margin over 2nd place.

Paul reports: "The day was hot with a slight breeze yet Robbie and Tom insisted on running with enough kit on to run to the north pole. Once again Robbie managed to defile the countryside with his toilet habits. The course was very tough and towards the end I think everyone was finding it hard going - not suprising as it turned out to be 29.5 miles."

London Marathon

Road Results Index Full Results

A wet and windy Blackheath for the start of this year's London with just a skip to provide shelter for those of us on the Blue start. Things did warm up a little once the race was under way, but approaching the river it felt colder again. The drizzle that had been quite pleasant turned into rain that wasn't so comfortable.
An excellent debut for Dan who achieved his main target of sub-3. He's currently vowing "never again", but we've all heard that one before.
Martin was on target for a sub-3 also until 21 miles, when it all started to drift away. Also a great run for Bob. Must have been the red mohican haircut. Hope the dye didn't run. Rob pulled out the stops today also for one of his quickest runs in the last couple of years. And Dave, who wasn't going to be able to run again after his bionic hip, got round in a very creditable time.

Paul reports: "All run on the coastal paths around the cliff tops of Portland and on Chesil beach which is a killer. Inside knowledge obviously helped as I managed to go the wrong way at 11 miles as I was talking to another runner. Any way good weather and I had a good run 2:45:26, position 3rd. And even though I was knackered I was forced into the pub by my family."

Tom reports: "The course was undulating in parts (that's the good news), the bad news I had to listen to Rob for 2 hours on the 2nd lap. He caught me up. As usual the same old stories again and again. Surprised that no pubs were open on the course. The 50 mph wind blew us up the hills or was it 90mph. Just as we finished it rained cats and dogs."

Dan and Martin chose Worthing for their final pre-London race. Dan had a target of 2:15 in mind and was marginally inside his schedule at 15 miles, but blasted the last lap, gaining 15 places. He looks a safe bet for a sub 3hr London.
Martin's target was 2:20 and was also inside his schedule at 15 miles, but put in his quickest lap of the race for the last 5 miles and a pb by about 7 and a half minutes.

Fleet Half Marathon

Road Results Index Full Results (go to News page from this link)

Dan reports: "The night before the race I became increasingly grateful for the late (11.30) start as my lovely little son was very restless & waking up at two hourly intervals!
As ever (!) I arrived in good time, and come the start I was fuelled with porridge, bananas, energy drinks and snacks & ready to go. The weather was drizzly & a bit blustery.
I managed, as hoped, to 6 minute mile the first mile, and the next and the next until 8 miles; keeping a very steady pace & making my way up the field. The course was fairly flat & I felt good, the long Sunday runs having a marked effect.
But come mile 9 the weather had become really nasty. I lost time on miles 9 & 10 battling against heavy rain & a really strong headwind ; wringing out my shirt and feeling glad I'd vaselined my nipples!
I did however still feel strong, and in the more sheltered final 3 miles I managed to return to 6 minute miling, finishing in 1hr 18mins 52secs (unoff), shaving 8 seconds off my PB. Were it not for the bad weather, I know this course would have offered me sub 6 minute miling all round; but there you go - that one's left to chase!"
1919 finishers.

The weather conditions were tough to be running a coastal half marathon with a strong wind and rain, so Bob's time suffered a little in comparison to his regular 1:29s. A minute to cross the start line didn't help either. Colin though couldn't repeat his Las Vegas performance.

The first event in the Collingwood Championship, Brighton's half marathon, with a flat first 7 miles, then climbing and undulating for the next 5 miles or so going towards Rottingdean and back. A strong, cold wind was a help in the first 3 miles, but a hindrance for most of the rest of the race. First it was a gusting headwind, and then a crosswind when heading up to the cliffs at Rottingdean and back. The wind was strong enough to be pushing you off course on occasion and blowing one foot into the other leg mid-stride.
Martin though, despite a slow start in the early congestion, managed a pb by nearly 3 minutes. Keith was pleased with his time as it was not far outside his pb. Bob continued to knock out the 1:29s.
Tom was hoping for around 1:48 but was fairly happy with his time as one of his better ones. Dave had a target of sub 2hrs and easily surpassed that.

Another of Paul's races down in the west country:
"it was actually 9.79 miles, don't ask me why. This was my first race this year after my calf injury in November. It was quite hilly but the weather was good and the calf was ok but still not 100%. I made a conscious effort not to push it too hard. The time wasn't good but I wasn't limping at the end (bonus)."
The calf is obviously still on his mind as there was no mention of any pubs this time.
