Mon 27 DecRound The Lakes 10k |
Paul reports: "Not my type of race but it was the
only one on. It's the first 10k I've done since 2002.
It was nice and sunny but cold. The day before I had been
giving my son skateboarding lessons, ie me on skateboard,
my mad terrier attached to my left leg and some contact
with tarmac, not that I'm making excuses for my time,
but the hospital did say I should have bed rest with plenty
of cider and bed baths (I wish). |

Chris Brooke reports: "Dan was first home in just
over 36 mins with Keith a half a minute behind. This fine
run by Keith, his fastest in the 3 race series, ensured
he won 3rd prize in the M40 category for the series. Paul
B was next home in 47 mins and slightly disappointed in
the time. He blamed the weather which was a bit cold and
windy. On the other hand I was over the moon with my time
of 49:13, which was 3 1/2 minutes quicker than my time
in the second race of the series. |

downhill stretches." |

Paul reports: "Second year for me at this one -
good conditions no wind and not too cold, but it's a road
race and I'm starting to just get bored with road running.
Didn't have any problems just get fed up plodding around
country lanes when there's plenty of good field and woods
etc. to run in. I forgot to stop my watch as well - definitely
slower than last year - I reckon about 1-06-30. Will check
the results online and let you know. Good thing is I've
got an excellent x-country next Sunday. |

Sun 5 SepThe Beast |
Well, its a good job I know my way around in Dorset now!
I travelled 55 Miles for this run and came back the right
way 31 Miles. Had read a lot about how tough this run
is, it's 13/14 Miles cross country and it was blisteringly
hot. It has two sets of steps along the coast that I had
trouble walking up, I kid you not. The problem I had was
the run is very narrow with hardly any places to pass
in the first 5 Miles or so, and there were loads of sties
and gates, it was like rush hour in London with queues
at all the gates, etc. You're forced to run at the pace
of the runners in front of you. It opens up for the last
4 miles but by that time I just wanted to finish. Verdict
- tough yes, but too much congestion for me. I didn't
really enjoy it, it became a plod. Time 1-54-54, going
kayaking now with a pack of Bud. |

Well done to Keith, who finished 2nd in the M40 category. But for a number of weeks of injury recently it might even have been higher. The attrition due to injuries was a little high for us this year, with Martin ducking out after the first night with a dodgy knee, and Paul and Bob both feeling back strains and unable to make the Friday run. |

A hot morning, the warmest of the year so far. Andy led
at the first corner and was in a group of 3 breaking away
by a few metres at the far corner of the starting field.
He was expecting to be shown round for another lap of
the field, but the marshal directed them out instead.
This meant they all had to do the extra lap at the finish,
which produced some confusion for the runners and the
marshals. Andy didn't have to worry too much about the
extra lap at the end though, as by that time he had a
300 to 400m margin over 2nd place. |

Road Results Index Full Results Tom reports: "The temperature was in the nineties (methinks he doth protest too much - editor). Too hot to run in, hence my everso-slow time. Plenty of pubs though, but I had no money on me. By the time I finished they had almost packed up and gone home." |

Road Results Index Full Results A wet and windy Blackheath for the start of this year's
London with just a skip to provide shelter for those of
us on the Blue start. Things did warm up a little once
the race was under way, but approaching the river it felt
colder again. The drizzle that had been quite pleasant
turned into rain that wasn't so comfortable. |

Paul reports: "All run on the coastal paths around the cliff tops of Portland and on Chesil beach which is a killer. Inside knowledge obviously helped as I managed to go the wrong way at 11 miles as I was talking to another runner. Any way good weather and I had a good run 2:45:26, position 3rd. And even though I was knackered I was forced into the pub by my family."

|
Road Results Index Full Results Tom reports: "The course was undulating in parts (that's the good news), the bad news I had to listen to Rob for 2 hours on the 2nd lap. He caught me up. As usual the same old stories again and again. Surprised that no pubs were open on the course. The 50 mph wind blew us up the hills or was it 90mph. Just as we finished it rained cats and dogs."

Road Results Index Full Results Dan and Martin chose Worthing for their final pre-London
race. Dan had a target of 2:15 in mind and was marginally
inside his schedule at 15 miles, but blasted the last
lap, gaining 15 places. He looks a safe bet for a sub
3hr London.

The weather conditions were tough to be running a coastal
half marathon with a strong wind and rain, so Bob's time
suffered a little in comparison to his regular 1:29s.
A minute to cross the start line didn't help either. Colin
though couldn't repeat his Las Vegas performance. |

Road Results Index Full Results The first event in the Collingwood Championship, Brighton's
half marathon, with a flat first 7 miles, then climbing
and undulating for the next 5 miles or so going towards
Rottingdean and back. A strong, cold wind was a help in
the first 3 miles, but a hindrance for most of the rest
of the race. First it was a gusting headwind, and then
a crosswind when heading up to the cliffs at Rottingdean
and back. The wind was strong enough to be pushing you
off course on occasion and blowing one foot into the other
leg mid-stride. |
