Road Results Index

I was really looking forward to this race - it was practically all cross-country with a couple of thigh high water crossings. But after about 20 mins I had problems with my calf. I thought it was cramp at first but I've strained it. I stopped quite a few times to massage it as none of the lady runners seemed keen to do it for me. The run itself was very good, through tight forest single tracks and lots of mud and water. The last water crossing numbed my calf. I'm not sure if I can manage to limp to the pub ( yeh right ).

Great Floridian Triathlon
Clermont, Florida

Road Results Index

This was the full Ironman distance of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run. Although Chris is a bit of an old hand at Triathlons he found this one a bit tough, especially the bike section. He wasn't alone in that though, as many of the competitors dropped out during or after the bike. "Who said Florida was flat...". Or as a fellow competitor said, "Central Florida has some crazy hills out near Clermont, and you do those twice for the full Ironman. You add the high heat, humidity, and several rough sections of road...."

These were Chris' splits:
Swim place 286, Swim time 1:22:42
Trans 1 place 229, Trans 1 time 8:13
Bike place 255, Bike time 6:56:29, Bike speed 16.2
Cumulative Place 259, Cumulative time 08:27:24
Trans 2 place 254, Trans 2 time 9:37
Run place 187, Run time 5:21:35, Pace/mile 12:17
Fin time 13:58:34 ** incl 6 min penalty
455 finishers
Chris was not best pleased about his 6 min penalty for "assistance" as it was only for handing his cap to wife Gina rather than throwing it on the road.

Paul reports: first time in this race - it was quite tough. Started and finished on the promenade. The first 3 miles against the wind then 2 loops with a long steep hill and then back along promenade with wind behind, luckily. Position about 21st and pleased. On a perfect day for running it was a touch of the night before affecting everyone. Rob was drumming in his band till late, but still managed to ghost past Paul in the last half kilometre. Chris was still suffering from the effects of that extra piece of chicken and spuds at the Club dinner. It was resting a bit heavy on his stomach. John was finishing his second race of the weekend. Colin who gave a lift to Paul, Chris and Dave tried every Wilkie trick in the book not to run. "I suppose there'll be no entries on
the Day." Colin bleated. He was wrong about that then. "I haven't got any pins." These were gleefully supplied.

Paul reports: it was a nice day - hot, but not roasting. The run was in Peaslake and ran around Hurtwood, a very nice location that I used to do a lot of mountain biking near. The race is quite hilly, not severe but some of them long. The bonus is that you get to run in the shade of the trees quite a lot of the time, and at one stage I'm sure I saw a pub, which is always good news. Unfortunately Bob was suffering from a stomach complaint (I did tell him not to have a kebab and Stella for his pre race meal). I would recommend this race. It was well marked , all off-road and not too far to travel to.

Paul reports: very nice run, scenic and all that, (didn't see a pub though). Not too hot, it was cloudy but a bit humid. You came across a lot of walkers and cyclists but only two horses. There were two old men in Collingwood colours hanging around looking dodgy - we kept clear of them.
Chris' view: one of the hardest runs I can ever remember. It was up and down every other stride. Who'd have thought that running round a lake would have been anything other that flat. Then to cap it all we had to come off the lake to avoid a nature reserve and the hill was like three Castle Hills (that's a very tough hill on our regular Sunday morning run) rolled into one. I would certainly do it again, but a little more training the next time I think. On the pub front I guess Paul was concentrating too hard on his run because after about five miles we ran through a Pub garden.
There were 303 finishers this year compared with 136 last year.

Belgrave won it again, in 45:05
Our A team: Keith ran his best time on this course, and very pleased it made him. He handed over in 10th to Adam who was disappointed to be roughly the same time as last year rather than quicker. He made up some places though to hand over in 6th to Dan. Dan only just managed to beat Keith's time, but made up a further place and closed the gap to the next. Andy unfortunately showed his lack of fitness after injury. Possibly he went off at his usual pace, but didn't have the stamina to sustain it, and looked like he was labouring on the finishing straight.
Our mixed B team all ran well, as did the veteran C team.
For the first time in a number of years we managed to field a ladies team, most of whom were running on just a few weeks training, so congratulations to all of them. A particular mention for Moira and Sheila who both did very well in their first race.

Day 1:
Keith made a good start, running a fair bit quicker than last year. Andy, Paul and Bob were all newcomers to the event, but would they last the week? The field was considerably larger than last year and the standard seemed higher. Keith's time would have seen him in the top ten last year. Chris ran about the same time as last year, but was about 20 places lower.
Day 2: Keith continues to beat his times from last year. Andy seems to have retired, but there was a one night appearance from Dan before he nips off on holiday. A photo of smiling John can be seen on David Denton's results page. Again there was a much larger field tonight compared to last year. Overall places are in brackets after race times.
Day 3: Paul left the park in 3rd place, aiming for his 15 minutes of fame - getting himself in the leaders' photo.
Day 4: Bob managed to get one over on Paul tonight, but Martin was also closer to him. The time trial usually sees a few upsets.
Day 5: Keith picked up a couple of places, as did everyone else. Martin managed to beat Bob tonight. Chris was very pleased with his Tour, running similar times to last year on a couple of nights, and faster on another couple, including a minute quicker on the final night - "It felt like I had a different pair of legs on tonight".
Paul and Bob were most indignant at the slight earlier in the week that they might not last the 5 days. They certainly did, although Paul did inform us he was running against medical advice - apparently the doctor told him he should have been in the pub drinking cider.
David Denton was also pleased, with race entries considerably higher this year. As always, The Tour was a model of efficient organisation - thanks David.

London Marathon

Andy was a little disappointed with his time, but put it down to being a bit exuberant in the first mile and finding conditions a bit too warm for him.
Tom was well down on recent marathon times and was also disappointed, and even found himself beaten by first-timer Melanie.
Bob Chart started the race but a recurrence of a hamstring injury after 8 miles forced him to drop out shortly afterwards.

Keith was happier with his run although suffering from a swollen face after a visit to the dentist. Terry was happy, well he didn't moan about his knees. Chris F struggled a bit after last week's marathon. I've got no excuse although it was bloody cold after yesterday. Tom did his usual sprint finish. Dave did really well considering the course is quite testing and it was the first time since his return to running that he'd encountered hills. Colin was a minute quicker than his previous 10K, still a lot of work to do.
