I was really looking forward to this race - it was practically all cross-country with a couple of thigh high water crossings. But after about 20 mins I had problems with my calf. I thought it was cramp at first but I've strained it. I stopped quite a few times to massage it as none of the lady runners seemed keen to do it for me. The run itself was very good, through tight forest single tracks and lots of mud and water. The last water crossing numbed my calf. I'm not sure if I can manage to limp to the pub ( yeh right ). |

This was the full Ironman distance of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run. Although Chris is a bit of an old hand at Triathlons he found this one a bit tough, especially the bike section. He wasn't alone in that though, as many of the competitors dropped out during or after the bike. "Who said Florida was flat...". Or as a fellow competitor said, "Central Florida has some crazy hills out near Clermont, and you do those twice for the full Ironman. You add the high heat, humidity, and several rough sections of road...." These were Chris' splits:

tough. Started and finished on the promenade. The first
3 miles against the wind then 2 loops with a long steep
hill and then back along promenade with wind behind, luckily.
Position about 21st and pleased. (ps no pubs this time

Weather sunny but not too hot, this was the hilliest race I've done - 7 miles multi-terrain and the hills were steep and went on and on. Field of around 100. Don't know my place yet but in top 20 so pleased but knackered. Off to the pub now. Paul placed better than he thought - 11 out of 98 finishers.

Paul reports: it was a nice day - hot, but not roasting. The run was in Peaslake and ran around Hurtwood, a very nice location that I used to do a lot of mountain biking near. The race is quite hilly, not severe but some of them long. The bonus is that you get to run in the shade of the trees quite a lot of the time, and at one stage I'm sure I saw a pub, which is always good news. Unfortunately Bob was suffering from a stomach complaint (I did tell him not to have a kebab and Stella for his pre race meal). I would recommend this race. It was well marked , all off-road and not too far to travel to.

I would do this one again. 278 finishers.
