Sunday morning saw the final event in the Lara Surrey Classic 10k 3 race series at Horton Country Park, Epsom. Dan Gillett was first home in this 2 lap course round the streets of Epsom. There were no marshalling difficulties like the previous race, and Dan finished well up the field taking the prize for 3rd senior male overall in the series. Terry Fogarty returned from a lengthy absence due to a foot injury to finish in 43:42. He was chased much of the way by Chris, but he was unable to close the gap. Paul is a little off his best form and couldn't catch his brother. Rob had an easier run this time as he wasn't pushing his daughter in their racing buggy. John is slowly regaining his previous form, beating Tom once more, while Tom was concentrating on his usual battle with Steph. Steph managed to hold him off for the first 4 miles but succumbed to the renowned Wilkie fast finish.

A pb by a large margin for Bob, and his first time under 40 minutes, despite a strong run in yesterday's league cross-country. Also, a return to racing for Dave who at one time thought his running days were over. The ever present Tom was unable to take part today as he had lost his number. Think of all those handicap points missed.

Main man of the day was Robbie Wilson, completing his 200th marathon. Numerous members were along for the ride, either in the marathon itself or just doing the start and finish with Rob. There were drinks and celebrations, and Anney's husband Matt, piping Robbie across the finish, plus of course a bit of a do back at Croygas afterwards.

After a hard-fought battle over the week, that went down to the wire on Friday night, Dan claimed 3rd overall and 2nd senior in his debut Tour. Martin, although finishing out of the prizes as 4th M40, came home with one after 3rd place M40 Dave Huck generously donated his prize back into the pot. Dan had been 4th for the first 2 days, but began to edge towards 3rd place Bernie Mulvaney by taking time from him on Day 3 at Alexandra Park and the following night at the time trial on Epsom Racecourse. At the start of the handicap on Friday night Dan had a 1 second advantage and they were both starting together. Bernie tracked Dan over the 1st lap and into the 2nd, where he tried to take the lead. Dan resisted and kicked in the final 100m to finish 10s ahead and secure his 3rd place. A great run under pressure. For his efforts he won some posey sunglasses. The future's so bright he's gotta wear shades. Missing from the overall results this year were both Malcolm and Keith who missed days due to illness. Thanks go to Adam Strong and Gina Mancini for pampering us with their massage skills on Mon, Wed and Fri evenings.

Another trip to Lloyd Park, this time for our regular appearance at the Striders Cross-Country Relay of 3 x 2.5 miles. The course was slightly changed from last year, but substantially the same. The weather was totally different - rain, rain, rain - making much of the course waterlogged. Without Andy, our A team was bound to be a bit worse off than last year, but strangely did almost exactly the same total time (only 3 secs slower). More competition from several SLH teams and Striders themselves meant we had to settle for 5th place this time.

Not quite a road race - more of a cross-country, along the length of Farthing Downs. Heavy rain earlier in the evening made the grass wet, but the tracks remained mostly hard, and in some places rock hard. A largely off-road course, starting from Warlingham Rugby Club, and out and back along Riddlesdown Common. Dan was once again in the prizes in his first 5 miler. He was around 8th or 9th leaving the starting field, but worked his way through and got into a group of 4 or 5 chasing the leader by 3k. The leader had shot his bolt by 4k and the group went through, with Dan moving through to 3rd, finishing about 100m behind 1st. Steph thought better of running with the buggy today having experienced the steep hill at 6k, and left daughter Athena to run the fun run with Rob and dog Bella.

Whilst Radcliffe, Kannouchi, Gebrselassie, and Tergat were thrilling us all up front, Terry was setting a new pb and going under 3:30 for the first time, despite only a month or so back into full training after a couple of months break with an injury. Steph's hard work in training also paid off with a pb, and a finish not too far behind partner Rob. Tom was also looking good at 18 miles, a couple of minutes in front of Rob and with a sub 4 hour time possible, but overheated badly almost within sight of the finish and lost time being swabbed down by the St John's Ambulance people.

It was a bright, sunny morning, but a strong wind brought the temperature right down. This seemed to be no problem for Dan though. He was in 10th at 2 or 3 miles with quite a gap in front of him, but he paced himself well to finish 4th. Adam also had a good run, starting like a rocket and holding on to finish in front of Martin. Jess was back racing after a spot of sciatica that troubled him at Hastings. As usual Tom had to do one of his quicker ones to keep Stephanie behind him.

The first race in this season's Collingwood Championships. It was a bright sunny day, but with a strong headwind for the final 3 miles along the promenade to the finish at St Leonards. Andy had a good run, finishing highly placed in a strong field, as did Adam to crack his pb by about 5 minutes. Jess however, pulled up on the 2 mile uphill stretch between 4 and 6 miles with a hamstring problem, and struggled for the rest of the race. Ann had her strongest run for some time, and there was also a good time from Chris F tracking her. Second pb of the day came from Sue to beat her previous best by 7 or 8 minutes.

Surrey Half Marathon Championships. A 2 lap, fairly undulating course. An impressive race from Dan beating his pb by around 5 mins, and he was also in the prizes - a Sweatshop voucher. He was a bit taken by surprise at the presentation, collecting his prize whilst still scoffing a chocolate bar. It was also an impressive run from Jess, running his quickest Half for some time. Paul struggled through and considered giving up a couple of times, but narrowly beat Rob in the end. Chris was a couple of minutes quicker than last week at Brighton, but found it hard, and Tom put in one of his quick ones, but still with enough left for his usual sprint finish.

A return to the one lap course for this race, albeit with a different start and finish at Chessington Community College. The start was somewhat constricted for a field of 5 or 600 which made for a pretty slow start for most. The finish was also a bit slower than expected with a final 2k that was mostly uphill. Dan continues his improvement in form with a pb by around a minute and a half. If he carries on like this, Andy will be looking over his shoulder before too long. Jess had another stormer, just holding off Rob who also had a very good run. Adam provided another sub-40, and Anne had her quickest 10k for some time. Chris F, in his first road race for the club was happy to be in his target zone of the 44s, and Chris was very happy to have knocked 2 minutes of his last 10k time at the Lara Horton Country Park 10k, especially considering that was somewhat short of the full distance.
