Rob and Thomas "enjoyed" a weekend away in Snowdonia running the 19th Marathon there. This was Rob's 4th time at the race and he did a creditable time considering the severity of the course - elevations from 300 to 1200ft, with some very steep climbs. Thomas however was a first-timer and found the going a bit tough. Full results |

The first race in The Lara Classic series at Nonsuch Park. The course was one short lap, followed by 2 large laps, incorporating a couple of slopes and one significant but short hill on each. Roger finished in around his usual time for this race, but was disappointed not to be a little quicker. Martin ditched his usual tactics of starting conservatively and building from there, in favour of starting hard and hanging on. This brought the reward of a pb by 46 seconds. Rob was on buggy pushing duty today, but was determined not to be outsprinted by Thomas in the last 50 metres again, and built up a good cushion to finish well in front of him. 186 finishers. The Samaritans 7, a 2 lap course in Leatherhead, used to be a regular on the club list, but this year was attended by only 3 members. Roger had an excellent result, finishing 4th overall, but 1st in the M40 age group. It was also another team 1st prize after Caterham last week - more bottles of wine. |

Road Results Index As usual, a good turn out for Collingwood favourite, the Caterham Half. Andy couldn't quite repeat his victory of last year, coming second to Stuart Major of SLH. Roger, Martin and Rob placed well though to bring the club home as first team in front of SLH. That makes 5 wins in 6 years. The Collingwood B team were in 3rd, ahead of Vets AC. There were plenty of other good performances, some from first-timers on this course who perhaps didn't appreciate exactly how tough this race is. They know now. 132 finishers. |

A tough off-road race starting in Lloyd Park, Croydon, using part of the regular cross-country course and then moving into Shirley Hills. An excellent position for Keith despite a wrong turn in Shirley Hills, but unfortunately no prize as there were only presentations to the first two in each category. Road Results Index Seven of us made the trip to Henfield in Sussex for this scenic, multi-terrain half marathon. Andy was top banana coming away with his first victory here, moving into the lead at 11 miles after a two horse race till then. When asked by the organisers whether he would return next year to defend his trophy, he replied in Arnie style "I'll be back". Roger was the second vet and in many races would have earned a prize as the first vet had already picked up the 2nd place prize. Unfortunately not here. Also unfortunately there was no team prize. We would have won that by a multi-terrain mile. Martin ran another pb by 39 seconds, but had the suspicion that the course was a touch short. |

Our resident globetrotter, Rob Wilson, chose Helsinki for his 176th marathon (or is it 177th, I forget) and was disappointed to be a little outside the newly adjusted London Marathon good for age (V65) standard of 4:01. He blamed it on a very slow start in the crush, and being stopped several times to allow the traffic to take precedence. On the up-side, he was 5th in his age group. Full Results |

Once again a good turn out from Collingwood for the Wimbledon 5k, the 7th event in the Surrey Road League, final of the Surrey Road Cup, and the Surrey 5k Championships. There were fine performances all round, with Keith running a course best, Roger a pb by 5 seconds, Martin a pb by 14 seconds (both beating their Morden 5k times), and of course another pb by Thomas. Congratulations go to Andy, Keith and Roger for earning a 3rd place in the County Championships behind Boxhill and Herne Hill, and 2nd place in the Surrey Road Cup behind Ranelagh. |

A good result for Collingwood in the fifth Surrey Road League event with the team placing third and earning themselves a Surrey bronze. Andy was not quite able to open his legs and show his class after his brief "enforced" layoff, but Keith was pleased to be back in the "37s" again and to hold off Roger. Martin was frustrated again in his aim of going under 40 minutes on an ideal flat and fast course. Thomas will be consulting his diary to see whether he shaved a few seconds off his pb. Collingwood placed 3rd in the Surrey Road League. Full results Men's Team Points (3 to score) |

Road Results Index A 2 lap course starting just outside the track at Wimbledon Park, and finishing on it. This of course meant a double visit to the not too short and not too sweet hill of Church Road, home to the famous Lawn Tennis Club. Andy was pleased with his 7th place bearing in mind there were some very good runners in front of him, and Roger beat his time of last year by 3 seconds. Martin was another to better last year's visit, taking almost a minute and a half off, and shaving 10 seconds off his pb. (Must be the marathon training). Roger and Martin both admitted though that they'd not been conservative enough on the first lap. Colin was not entirely happy with his run, describing it as "terrible". He was also less than happy to be missed off the results issued straight after the race. See Runners World for full results. |

Road Results Index The big one. Congratulations to Roger on his pb. Sub 3 hours next year Rog? For those of you watching the BBC interview with Roger Black and wondering if the guy he was running with in the first 5 miles who had done 179 marathons was our own Rob Wilson - sadly not, or fortunately for Mr Black! A good run for Bernard. Our spies on the course tell us that he didn't look too clever at 7 miles, but he seemed comfortable at 14 miles when passed by Martin. He looked even more comfortable at 24 miles when he went back past Martin who by that time was fading into 7 min 50 pace and beyond. Still, Martin was happy with his time in his first outing at the distance, although disappointed at his gradual decline from 18 miles despite a much stronger run up to 20 miles at Worthing. Graham's run was not so happy. Perhaps he is now ruing the decision to run on memory rather than training. He was last heard of in a semi-comatose position in bed. Index Surrey Road League Table
With some members on Marathon and Half Marathon duty in Taunton today, and others saving themselves for London next week, there was a lower than usual turn-out for Croydon. Andy, Keith and Terry scored points for the club in the first of this season's Surrey Road League races, finishing in fifth place behind SLH, Croydon Harriers, Striders of Croydon and Sutton Runners. Hopefully in the next in the series with a larger complement of runners, we'll manage to finish in front of at least one of those. |

A change is as good as a rest, but then the Brooke brothers and Old Red Hat probably didn't see this as a rest from The London Marathon. Still it was a weekend away. A 2 lap course with a downhill mile to finish the lap, but preceded by a nice little hill. Marathon number 173 for Rob and 174 coming up next weekend. Full results |

Also opting for a weekend away were the Wilkie brothers. A real family weekend! For Thomas it was just a little warm up for the big one next weekend, but he still managed another pb. Full results |

Preparations for the London and Taunton Marathons brought the Collingwood boys to Worthing for 4 x 5 mile laps. Congratulations to Roger for another pb. 598 finishers. |

Our sole representative for 2 laps around Kingston was Doug. He was a little slower than he might have been as he was selflessly helping his brother and sister in their London preparation. Full results |

A good turn out for the tough Hastings Half. Martin shaved 9 seconds off his pb, set a few weeks ago at Wokingham. Keith was pleased to be under 90 minutes in what for him is a little over-distance. A narrow victory for Graham over Leo, despite his low maintenance training regime. Full results |

30 miles in the cold and wet off-road on the Surrey/Sussex border. Ok so it's not quite a road race. The guys said it was a different course from previous years - so that explains why they got lost (same as every year). John was the only one to actually complete the course, and even did an extra 4 miles. The others were forced to curtail their enjoyment in the failing light and short-cutted to the finish for a total of 25 miles. |

Roger had recommended this race as flat and fast and he wasn't wrong, getting under 81 minutes for the first time. Martin also set a new pb, by over 2 minutes to gain his first sub-90 half marathon. Colin also showed some form to finish in front of Chris. Thomas however, was suffering from after-effects of his Las Vegas Marathon, or perhaps he still had all his winnings in his pockets. |
